2. WHAT IS ALUMINIUM ?
• Aluminium originates from bauxite, an ore typically found in the topsoil of
various tropical and subtropical regions.
• The bauxite is purified using the Bayer process. This process involves
dissolving aluminium trihydrate to leave alumina plus iron and titanium
oxides.
• Aluminium is the world’s most abundant metal and is the third most
common element, comprising 8% of the earth’s crust. The versatility of
aluminium makes it the most widely used metal after steel.
• It can be easily shaped, rolled, drawn, extruded, welded and therefore it is
the ideal metal for construction.

• It is one of the largest integrated primary producer of aluminium
in Asia.
• National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) is a Navratna CPSE
under Ministry of Mines. It was established on 7th January, 1981,
with its registered office at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The Company is
a group ‘A’ CPSE, having integrated and diversified operations in
mining, metal and power.

Bauxite-Alumina-Aluminium- Power Complex in the Country.
