Unit 1 Knowing Me, Knowing You
Lat – A famous cartoonist : Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid.
He was born on 5th March 1951 in Perak.
His parents called him Lat, which means round ( bulat ).
He started drawing at 9 years old.
His father gave him paper to draw.
His first comic book ‘Tiga Sekawan’ was published in 1964.
He moved to Kuala Lumpur in 1970 and worked for Berita Harian newspaper as a crime
reporter.
Later, he drew cartoons for New Straits Times newspaper.
His first book, Kampung Boy which was based on his childhood days was published in
1979.
In 2002, he was awarded the Arts and Culture Prize at the 13th Fukuoka Asian Culture
Prizes in Japan.
In 1994, he was given the title Datuk.
He is now living in Ipoh with his family and still drawing and displaying his cartoons at
exhibitions.
His cartoons always appear in comic books, magazines and newspapers which show the
friendships of Malaysian and reflect the unique culture of Malaysians.

Prince Qhurram was the fifth son of Emperor Jahangir.
He met the most beautiful girl at a bazaar.
They got married and lived in Agra.
Prince Qhurram was a brilliant man who loved art.

Unit 6 Take One! Action

Kamal finds out how plastic, aluminium cans and glass are recycled.

The Haven
A builder named Effendi was famous for constructing buildings and houses.
Effendi’s brother, Hafizi, was a nature lover. He loved birdwatching, jungle trekking
and camping in ‘ The Haven ‘ .
‘ The Haven ‘ was a place with land and water. It was called a wetland.
The wetland was a home to many types of flora and fauna.

Unit 10 Values To Remember
Inoki
Emperor Yamashito sent a precious crystal ball to Emperor Sasaki to save Prince Hiro
who was suffering from a strange illness.
The ship carrying the crystal ball was caught in a terrible storm.
It sank to the bottom of the sea.
Emperor Yamashito wanted to reward anyone who could find the crystal ball.
Inoki, a young widow, wanted a better life for her son.
So she told the emperor that she was able to find the crystal ball for him.
Then she was allowed to be taken to the place where the ship sank.
Inoki brought along a dagger, a rope tied around her waist and dived into the sea.
It was a dangerous task but she swam to the bottom of the sea.
It was a dragon palace.
She saw the crystal ball and intended to take it.
Unfortunately, she was stopped by the evil monsters.
She was brought to see the dragon and was asked to complete three tasks in thirty
minutes.
First, she had to collect fifty pink pearls and string them into a necklace.
Then, she had to find one hundred white pearls to make powder from them.
Finally, she had to gather thirty sea creatures to sing in front of the dragon.
The kind sea creatures accidentally heard the dragon’s demands. They helped Inoki to
complete all the tasks.
The dragon handed over the crystal ball to her but she was attacked by the evil
monsters.
She used her dagger and fought them all.
She was successful to bring back the crystal ball.
Because of her courage and bravery, the emperor rewarded her handsomely.

Unit 11 Caring Society
Louis Braille was born in France in 1809.
He injured his left eye when he was three years old. By the age of four he was
completely blind.
He studied at the school for the blind in Paris using books which were made of
cardboard and had letters that were raised.
The books were very large and bulky.
He had wanted to invent some alphabet codes to make finger reading quick.
Louis was an intelligent student.
He became a teacher after graduating and invented a new form of writing using the
system of raised dots. It was called Braille.
In Braille, the letters of the alphabet are made up of dots. The position of the
different dots would represent the different letters of the alphabet.

We use possessive adjectives to show ownership or belonging.
Example : The pupils thanked their teachers by giving them a cake.
Possessive adjectives appear before nouns.
Example : We should take care of our parks.
Examples of possessive adjectives: ‘my’, ‘your’, ‘our’, ‘their’, ‘his’, ‘her’, ‘its’

Unit 12 Cymbals and Drums
An orchestra is led by a conductor.
The conductor stands in front of the orchestra.
The orchestra is made up of four main sections, the percussion instruments, the brass
instruments, the woodwind instruments and the string instruments.
Musicians playing the string instruments are seated across each other in front of the
conductor. They play the cello, the double bass and the violin.
Musicians playing the woodwind instruments for example the flute, piccolo and the
clarinet are placed in the centre.
The brass instruments such as the trumpet and the trombone are behind the
woodwind instruments.
The percussion instruments which include the drums, the cymbals and the tambourine
are at the back of the orchestra.

Unit 13 Moving Beyond
‘Intelligent buildings’ control and monitor things like the lighting, heating, security,
closed-circuit television (CCTV) and alarm system.
They also monitor the temperature, audio-visual and entertainment systems, air
ventilation and even the movement of people working there.
Menara TM, the headquarters of Telekom Malaysia Berhad, is a good example of an
intelligent building. It is a 55-storey building.
It was designed by Hijjas Kasturi and Associates.
It has a telecommunication system that makes communication faster and easier.
It also has the Telelifts, a Document Conveyor System (DCS) to move documents and
parcels quickly within the building.
The narrow frontages of Menara TM reduce heat from entering the building and this
lessens the use of air conditioning. Thus, it helps to save energy.
