Presentation on English My Way, one of 6 projects in the community-based English Language Competition. Presented by Kate Thompson ate Local Digital Today on 14 November 2014.
2. English Language Policy
• 95% of people say that speaking English is an important part of being
“truly British”
British Attitudes Survey 2013
• In 2009-10 nearly one in ten (9%) of people born outside of the UK aged 16
or over (0.5m people) self reported as having below average or poor
English. (Citizenship Survey)
‘Learning English is a passport to prosperity, Britain misses out and our
country is poorer if people can’t speak our language. Improved English
language skills can allow people to interact with their local communities,
make friends, gain employment and increase their self-confidence.’
Eric Pickles, January 2013

of use and how much it helps them
• Very good, very easy to use
• It is very good for our learners with language barriers who are from different ethnic
minority groups living in North London
• Great resources and useful for those with very little English
