2. Introduction
• We noticed a problem: WVU is an
inconvenient location geographically for
students
• Many of us have friends/family that choose
not to go here because of the difficulties it
imposes
• oneWVU includes them, too
3. WVU Rules
• By law, it is not required that every entrance
be handicap accessible
• When new federal regulations come out, they
do not have to be accomodated immediately –
only when renovating.
• As stated in the Student Resource Manual, if a
parking permit is requested for more than a
month, it may be necessary to get a permit
from your home state.
4. Consider:
• Wouldn’t WVU be a more competitive
university if it catered more to potential
disabled students’ needs?
• It would create more revenue for the school
with the increased number of students willing
to attend.
• The diversity disabled students would bring to
WVU would allow for an increase in job
placement upon graduation.
31. Interview with Office of Disabilities
• Picture
• New regulations only come into effect when a
building is under renovation
• Students to opt out of coming here because of
the geographical stress it imposes
• Buses have to pick students up very early
– Sometimes 2 hours early
– Unavailable on weekends
32. Office of Disabilities
• WVU does at least what is required and does
try to go above and beyond
– Always areas for improvement
• Why it is/isn’t working
• Additional problems
33. Theoretical Schedule
• List of classes
• And locations
• And times
– See how easily achievable this would be for a
disabled student
37. Interview with Student
“I really wanted to go to WVU when I graduated
high school. But because of my disability, I felt
it would never be an option for me. I decided
to go to OU instead because the campus is a
lot easier to get around. If WVU ever becomes
more disabled-friendly, I think they would be
surprised how many more people would
apply.” - Erika Kincaid, Sophomore at OU
46. • These are all simple, easy solutions that would
really change things on campus.
47. Benefits
• All of these changes would make physically
disabled students lives’ easier
• It would promote their independence
• Create a more positive image of WVU
• Contributes to diversity
• Generates more revenue
How it is difficult to get from point A to point B
Hill leading from Colson toward Hodges, Records Services, and Armstrong
Steepness of the hill
Jackie walking up the steep hill
Really good pictures of steepness of Colson hill
ONLY STUDENT ENTRANCE to Records Services – down steep hill between Colson and Hodges
Sole disabled-accessible entrance to Armstrong via the steep hill
sole entrance to Hodges via the steep hill or off prt up the Brook’s elevator to 1st floor, past Armstrong
Handicap-accessible door from prt into Brooks – only way off prt to get to campus
Steep hill between Hodges and Eisland
Jackie walking the steep hill between Hodges and Eisland
Potential handicap-accessible door to Hodges
Handicap-accessible door to Eisland – could make main door accessbile, too
Bottom handicap-accessible door into Eisland
ADA van operating hours – NOTE: Often have to pick up disabled students 2 hours prior to class in order to make it on time.
2nd floor women’s bathroom, Hodges: length of main entrance
Tiny door size of actual stall in Hodges – only Handicap-accessible bathroom was on ground floor; if desperate, disabled student could not enter any other stall if in a wheelchair
Handicap-accessible door to E Moore Hall – note no longer has a push-button for those in wheelchairs - have to take round-about way to get to E Moore Hall if disabled: past E Moore Hall, turn at Purinton House, then back toward E Moore Hall = pretty ridiculous
Insane stairways to get to Armstrong = not handicap-accessbile whatsoever
Handicap-accessible entrance at front of Mountainlair
Or could go via career center
Or walk past long driveway to parking garage and enter
Only entrance to Undergraduate Scheduling offices = down the driveway
BUT easiest way into Lair is still via front side door
However, once inside, you have to go down the ramp downstairs in order to go up
Office of disabilites located here
Pic of Rm 101 in Clark Hall: can only enter at top of classroom and sit in one of two handicap-accesible desks there
There is also a handicap-accessible desk at the bottom of the classroom, however, the door to get to the bottom floor is exit-only. Additionally, the desk is located under the chalkboard and whiteboards AND there are no additional desks at the bottom floor of the classroom – have to walk to up or two step to reach 1st seating row
Make ground-level door to Rm 101, Clark Hall, an entry way that is handicapped-accessible. Not only will it allow easy entry for the classroom, but it is also the only door to Clark right along the university road
Make side door to Hodges handicap-accessible. The only way disabled students can get from the ADA stop to Hodges (currently) would be to take the ramp alongside the prt, go into Brooks, up one floor, past armstrong, and down the ramp to the current handicap-accessible door to Hodges.
Add more vans to the ADA program at WVU to better accommodate all disabled students
Fix the handicap-door-button to E Moore Hall
Make handicap-button to side door at front of Lair more visible – we walked by this door idk how many times before seeing the button
Make more than just one bathroom in Armstrong handicap-friendly. It is more difficult for disabled students to get around, so why prolong their trip to the bathroom even more?
