Adkins 1 Brandy Adkins ENG 230-Project Instructor Morgan Richardson 11 November 2011 The assignment was to take excerpts from the literature that we have studied so far and connect it to media sources from the present day. While this sounded challenging when first proposed, it ended up being a very entertaining task. Having collected a wide variety of quotes along the way I had many options to choose from and actually had a hard time narrowing my list to the five I am presenting. The last one I just threw in there for fun, but it is still a relevant connection. When Conrad wrote, “It was not sleep—it seemed unnatural, like a state of trance,” he was describing the nature of an unfamiliar area of the Congo as portrayed by his lead character Marlow (54). The Congo was an eerie place full of confusion and turmoil to those who were not native to that region. It was quiet and amazing, often leaving the viewer in awe of its magnificence. The more literal connection that I made to the text was in comparison to the Chris Angel picture. Chris Angel is often thought of as being unnatural and looks as though he is in a state of trance while he is levitating. Both the Congo and Chris Angel are unexplainable and fascinating in ways that we can’t truly understand, but can appreciate. Everything about Chris Angel is unnatural and this was my attempt to verbally explain his levitation act. The image of Chuckie is one that haunted my dreams for many years. Not only is he is the villain so many of the Chuckie movies, but I also have this unusual aversion to dolls that move and talk. The fear of creepy dolls can be enough by itself, but add an insane possessed killer doll to the equation and that is a legitimate nightmare for me. Conrad says, “You
- 2. Adkins 2 remember it, you dream of it, you wake up at night and think of it—years after—and go hot and cold all over” (49-50). Conrad was discussing the stress of his first trip on a steamboat and the how he struggled to keep it afloat. The sound of the boat hitting something was a memory he would never forget. The nightmare of this stress still haunts him. In comparison, the first Child’s Play movie came out over 20 years ago and still haunts me and many others to this day. The stress and fear of such events or movies can wake you up at night and literally make you go hot and cold all over. In The Silence of the Lambs movie Clarice Starling says, “You see a lot, Doctor. But are you strong enough to point that high-powered perception at yourself? What about it? Why don't you - why don't you look at yourself and write down what you see? Or maybe you're afraid to.” This is said during one of their many conversations where Hannibal Lector slowly releases the information that he wants her to know about who his is and what he has done. In a similar design, Heart of Darkness Marlow says, “Very well; I hear; I admit, but I have a voice too, and for good or evil mine is the speech that cannot be silenced” (51). Marlow is discussing how the mind of a man is capable of anything, it holds the past and the future. Marlow explains that no matter what emotion or atrocity a man beholds or it part of he will be calm, but his story will be worth listening to. This is similar to The Silence of the Lambs and holds resemblance. The infidelity of Tiger Woods to his now ex-wife Elin has been in the media for what seems like years now. Elin maintained her dignity through it all, but did make attempts to stand by her man in the beginning. In a similar scene in The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg the Lady Dalcastle says, “Go to my husband, that poor unfortunate, blindfolded person, and open his eyes to his degenerate and sinful state” (13). It was as if she really thought her husband didn’t realize what he was doing and needed it
- 3. Adkins 3 brought to his attention. Elin, at first, took this stance but as more and more mistresses began to appear she decided that she could not reconcile. Hogg’s book had a similar story except that both spouses were in the wrong, but the husband did pay to financially support his wife and her son. Tiger too paid a considerable amount of money, but the kids were placed with Elin. The final slide was one that is a direct comparison. Betty White is on one of my new favorite shows Hot in Cleveland. She has also been, for some reason, a recent fad among the public. When I watch the show they do some side shots of her where I can’t help but think how odd it is that old women have such prominent potbellies. In The Stranger Camus says, “I’d never noticed what huge stomachs old women can have.” This caught my attention because while the thought was simple and obvious, I too had the same observation. Some of the quotes were obvious comparisons to the pictures that I had chosen. Some of the quotes definitely needed some explanation, but that is how some comparisons are made. I could have probably done this for every book, poem, or text read for the class. It was interesting and enjoyable and helped directly relate the text to everyday modern issues or circumstances.
