Endangered Animals Unit Brittany Telecky
Unit Goals 1. Students will develop empathy, concern, and awareness of and about endangered animals.  2. Students will understand the major factors that cause animals to become rare, threatened, endangered, and extinct (habitat destruction, pollution, and poaching). 3. Students will gain an understanding of what is presently being done to save endangered animals. 4. Students will explore their own ideas of what needs to be done, as well as what individuals and groups can do, to help save endangered animals.  5. In groups of four, students will research an animal in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the problems and possible solutions for a particular endangered animal.
Previous Lesson Previous lesson- Habitat and Its Components  Objective: students will be able to define “habitat” and identify its components. Students will brainstorm, then organize the synthesize the information. Using Google Docs draw and label parts of own habitat, then of an animal’s habitat. Procedure: On the board make two columns with headings “people” and “wildlife”. Ask the students what people need in order to survive; write down all responses. Do the same for wildlife heading. Go back over the lists to try to narrow each one of them down to water, food, shelter, space, arrangement, sunlight, air, and soil. -define habitat: home for animals, what they need in order to survive. -add “pets” and “plants”. Do these have the same components? -have students draw pictures of their own habitats (homes) and label water, food, shelter, space, and arrangement. Share the pictures, then have students draw pictures of an animal’s habitat and label the parts.
Next Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze problems that occur when animals are moved from the wild to captivity. Students design zoo environments for endangered animals that satisfy all the needs for that particular animal. Students will create a new drawing in Google Docs. Procedure: Review the definition of “habitat” List components on board (water, food, space, protection, arrangement) -discuss different types of habitat in relation to different animals. -choose one type of animal, and list habitat requirements for that animal. -draw a picture of that animal in a zoo with all its needs satisfied. Label the needs of the animal. Is it possible? Discuss pictures. Discuss the problems scientists and zookeepers have when they want to keep a wild animal in an enclosed area.
Endangered Animals Commercial Lesson Goals 1. Students will understand key terms and information about endangered animals. 2. Understand our actions can cause animals harm. 3. They will understand how the animals become endangered and how we can help. 4. The students work at WWF and need to create a commercial about their assigned animal. Show that they are well educated about the animal by presenting facts about their endangered animal to the rest of the class.
Lesson Activities Activity 1- (7 minutes) Have students take a quiz at the beginning of the lesson to see what they already know. Activity 2- (5 minutes) Have students brainstorm animals that they think are endangered and reasons why they are endangered. Activity 3- (5 minutes) Ask for volunteers to share their ideas. Discuss as a class what animals are endangered and reasons why. Activity 4- (30 minutes) Learning about endangered animals. Knowing key terms of endangered animals. Where at in the world are there the most endangered animals. What can we do to help save them. Organizations that help with endangered animals. Activity 5- (45 minutes) Students are assigned groups and an animal to research. They will make a commercial that tells viewers about the endangered animal and what we can do to help. Activity 6- (15 minutes) Students present their commercial to the class. Their classmates fill out their worksheet as the group is presenting. Activity 7- (15 minutes) Students take quiz that was at the beginning of the class to see if they gained knowledge about those questions. Have another quiz to see what the children learned that day. Activity 8-(2 minutes) Wrap up.
End of Lesson Quiz To see if students did learn the vocabulary and were paying attention to the slides. testmoz.com/27222 password: apple27
