1. Emmaus was founded in 1978 by
Dr. Arthur S. Flemming, former
Secretary of Health, Education, and
Welfare under President
Eisenhower, and a coalition of five
local Faith communities. Dr.
Flemming, recognized that many
seniors are able to remain living
independently when they have
support in a few key areas: access
to food, programs to keep them
physically and socially active, and
assistance with issues such as
affordable housing. Today, we
coordinate more than 700
volunteers annually who help us
provide services to thousands of
seniors (60+) in the DC Area.
