Study of a music directorEmil Nava
About Emil navaEmil Nava is a successful music video director who has directed all of Jessie J’s music videos so far and had directed for other artists such as TinchyStryder and Ed Sheeran. At school he knew he loved Music and Drama but never knew he wanted to have a career in directing until he got onto a film set.
Emil nava on his workThis is a video clip I found on the internet of Emil Nava talking about how came to be a music director and working with Jessie J.
Why Emil Nava?I chose to make a case study on Emil Nava because I thought Jessie J’s music videos I researched and found out that Emil Nava has actually directed all of Jessie j’s videos up to date.In the video on the previous page Emil explains how he likes to let the artists have their input into how the video looks.I find all of Jessie J’s music videos quite interesting as they are quite colourfuland unique.Jessie J Nobody’s perfect
WorksNava has directed music videos with many up and coming artists.
Signature stylesI have noticed that many music video directors have lots of signature styles such as filming mainly in black and white or using lots of bright colours. However, I couldn’t find many signature styles that stood out from Nava’s work. As far as I know he hasn’t directed many videos in his career yet. Nava himself said that he likes to let the artist have as much input as possible so most of his videos are quite different to suit the artist’s taste.
Signature StylesMany directors seem to have signature styles, I found that one of Nava’s signature styles was wide screen shots however, many other directors choose to use wide screen.
Nobody’s perfectWhen watching Jessie J’s Nobody’ Perfect music video I noticed that there is lots of intertextual references to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
IntertextualityThe clips of Jessie at the long table have a intertextual reference to Alice in Wonderland once again as it imitates the ‘madhatter scene’ at the long table and everyone is dressed up.
narrativeAt the start of the video there is a shot of gates opening and the camera panning towards the house. This gives a sense of invitation. Also, there is a young girls voice which is talking above the video this gives the feeling of a story being told to the audience.
Behind the ScenesThis is a short clip to show what it’s like working on set with Emil Nava, he seems like quite an energetic director which clearly shows he is passionate about what he does.
