Ely Cathedral was founded in 673 by Saint Etheldreda, daughter of the Anglo-Saxon king, who established a monastery there. When she died, a shrine was built in her memory at the site. The current cathedral, located in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, has a central octagonal tower rising from the building's breadth to the wooden-domed roof, forming the only Gothic dome in existence.
