Elizabeth Gilbert is a successful author. She is an author that embraces being vulnerable and as such people revel in her authenticity. When people attain success others look to them for advice. Elizabeth says that one day she spoke from the stage to a large group. She spoke of feeling fulfilled when you find your passion. One day not long after that particular presentation had ended she received her usual mail, much of it fan mail. She opened one letter and as she read she was sent into shock. One of the women in her audience on the day of that recent presentation wrote. "thanks for making me feel like crap for never ever in my life finding my PASSION"(I paraphrase). Elizabeth Gilbert was forced to think long and hard about how her words had hurt that women so deeply. She began to think about how many times she had delivered that very same presentation and said the very same words and she wondered who else felt LESS because of them. Thus her pivot toward the paradigm of people that begin life focused on one task like a jackhammer know their purpose seemingly from birth vs. those that are on a life journey with a path that resembles that of a hummingbird or bumble bee.
