9. Enriching. Curious. Authentic.
Resting on the gentling rolling foothills
that cascade down from the ever-
present Mount Meru is the bustling and
vibrant town of Arusha. It is on the outskirts
of this town, and hidden amongst one of
Tanzania’s largest coffee plantations, that
you will find Arusha Coffee Lodge, a perfect
haven for relaxation either before or after
any African safari.
Comprising of 30 Plantation Houses –
inclusive of 12 Plantation Suites – that
radiate out into the evergreen coffee fields,
Arusha Coffee Lodge has been designed
around an original landowner’s home that
dates back to the early 1900’s.
The theme of coffee is never too far away
at Arusha Coffee Lodge, the evidence for
which can be found in the Plantation Suites
where coffee beans permeate the interior
designs of both the main bedroom and the
beautifully appointed en suite bathroom.
The homely feel of the Lodge is by no
means accidental as the origins of the
homestead emit glimpses of times-gone-
by. The friendly and personable Lodge
Ambassadors help maintain this ambiance,
drawing appreciation from all those who
visit and stay.
Within Arusha Coffee Lodge’s main house
resides an ‘a la carte’ restaurant, an
intimate bistro & bar and a cozy lounge,
all of which possess inviting open log-fires
that fill the cool night air with a comforting
warmth and a welcoming glow.
With two boutiques, a swimming pool and
a popular garden luncheon terrace, Arusha
Coffee Lodge encourages exploration and
discovery at every turn.
From the industrious coffee pickers
gathering in the harvest to the aromas
of the morning brew emanating from the
main Plantation House as breakfast is
being prepared, Arusha Coffee Lodge is
full of sensory experiences that revitalize
the body and soul for the adventures and
excitement that lie ahead.

12. Have you ever wondered how the humble coffee bean
goes from the bush to your cup?
When you stay with us at Arusha Coffee Lodge you
will have the opportunity to learn the fascinating life
cycle of the world’s most consumed bean, thanks to an
informative and enjoyable ‘Coffee Tour’.
The tour takes place within the grounds of the Lodge,
which is itself located within one Tanzania’s largest
coffee estates. Weaving in and around the evergreen
coffee bushes, the Lodge’s ‘Coffee Guide’ explains
how the bean is nurtured, harvested, dried and finally
roasted to produce a myriad of differing blends that sate
the taste buds of even the most ardent of connoisseurs.
But it is our Guests who always seem somewhat
surprised - and happily so - to learn that the bushes that
embrace their accommodations are not just there for
show or decoration, but are in fact part of a working
coffee plantation.
The ‘Coffee Tour’ neatly culminates with the roasting of
coffee beans and with that all-important taste test.

13. Plaster House is the brainchild of a visionary Australian
lady, Sarah Rejman.
In 2008 Sarah was inspired to create a facility that could
provide a place in which children from around Tanzania
could recover from corrective orthopedic surgery, plastic
surgery or neurosurgery.
The first ‘Plaster House’ was in rented accommodation,
housing just 9 beds. Since those early days Sarah has
now built a purpose-built facility that can look after up to
100 children at a time.
Guests staying at Arusha Coffee Lodge can arrange to
visit Plaster House and see first-hand the incredible
work that Sarah and her team of volunteers do so ably.
Changing so many lives for the better, each and every
donation goes directly towards the welfare of all the
children at Plaster House, and Elewana is proud to
support Sarah in her endeavours.

The most recent addition to Elewana Encounters
includes that of the introduction at Arusha Coffee Lodge
of the new Land Rover Experience Centre.
The Experience Centre – run and maintained by Land
Rover’s accredited drivers and instructors – delivers an
array of driving experience for the would-be off-roader,
including the chance to drive the very latest Land Rover
Discovery on the Lodge’s very own off-road driver-
training facility - to be opened January 1st 2015.
With obstacles to navigate such as fallen tree trunks,
steep inclines and drop-offs, a balancing hill, and
a flooded water pit, participants can learn from the
highly-experienced instructors as to how to cope with
the extremes of wilderness driving. Needless to say
the Discovery copes with each and every trial with
consumate ease.
As well as tuition on the off-road facility, Elewana
also offers the chance to self-drive to any and all of
Tanzania’s northern National Parks including Tarangire,
Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Guided by a lead vehicle
and accompanied ‘Top Gear-style’ by Land Rover
Experience’s very own support crew, this self-drive
safari is surely the ideal getaway for travellers wishing
to have the ultimate story to tell on their return home.

15. Wondrous. Alluring. Dreamlike.
Many a childhood has been spent
playing in the world of ‘make-
believe’. Within this imaginary existence
many will have played high up in the bows of
trees and, for the lucky few, built a ‘palace’
in the sky.
It is this nostalgic sparkle that is all too
visible in the eyes of ‘grown-ups’ who gaze
upon Tarangire Treetops for the first time.
Tarangire Treetops sits serenely in a private
game reserve bordering the Tarangire
National Park.
As you arrive at the Lodge you are
immediately greeted by a blaze of colour
and a host of smiles both of which belong
to the local Maasai tribesmen who have
become part of the enchanting story that is
Tarangire Treetops.
Centered about a Main Lodge - which
itself encases a thousand year-old baobab
tree - Tarangire Treetops comprises of 20
elevated ‘tree house’ Guest Rooms all of
which are afforded views over the tops of
the surrounding marula and baobab trees.
Each ‘tree house’ boasts one of the largest
bedrooms to be found in any camp or lodge
in East Africa, and in turn possess a stylish
en-suite twin shower room.
With furnishings that create warmth
and demonstrate a commitment to
local craftsmanship, the ‘up-in-the-air’
experience is completed by the open-
fronted room design and an expansive but
private balcony overlooking the Tarangire
plains.
Dining at Treetops sustains the momentum
of undeniably memorable moments.
Whether enjoying a lantern-lit dinner in
a traditional Boma echoing to the sounds
of Maasai chants, or eating poolside by
candlelight whilst a wealth of wildlife comes
to drink at the Lodge waterhole, Treetops
creates memories by the minute and in so
many differing ways.
It is the pure delight and sheer pleasure
of Tarangire Treetops that will remain with
you for years to come, and will keep you
returning, if only in spirit, to this delightfully
dreamlike lodge.

18. Any visit you make to Tarangire Treetops will be a
adventure into the world of diverse wildlife and colourful
cultures.
Tarangire National Park is famous for its huge number
of elephants, baobab trees and tree-climbing lions.
However there are many more resident animals in the
Park, such as zebra, antelope and the reticulated giraffe.
But with the Lodge located only a short distance from
the Tarangire Park, the Lodge welcomes many four-
legged visitors to its water hole enthralling all who sit
and watch. Home to more than 550 species, the Park is
also a haven for bird enthusiasts who can expect so see
dozens of species even in the dry season.
Game drives into the Park are a highlight of any visit
to Treetops. Guided by one of Elewana’s experienced
guiding team, your game-drive vehicle will provide an
excellent vantage point for watching the local wildlife -
and in complete comfort and safety.
And in the evening, you are invited to marvel at the
dramatic sunsets on the aptly named Sunset Hill,
enjoying uninterrupted and panoramic views of Tarangire
and the shimmering Lake Manyara in the adjacent Rift
Valley.

19. Tarangire Treetops is located just outside of the National
Park, which presents opportunities for activities such
as guided bush walks. However this area receives
significantly less protection for the indigenous wildlife
that wanders unwittingly out of the protected areas of
the Park.
With poaching always a constant threat, Treetops, with
the help of the local communities have created a safety
corridor for lion, leopard and elephant, the latter of which
performs its own mini-migration between Tarangire and
the adjacent Manyara region. This protective area is
known as a Wildlife Management Area or W.M.A. and has
saved countless animals to date.
This enterprise has many stakeholders including local
communities, local authorities and of course Tarangire
Treetops. We invite any of our Guests visiting Treetops to
learn more about the essential work being undertaken
to preserve the well-being of all the animals that inhabit
the Tarangire plains.

As well as Tarangire’s plentiful wildlife, Treetops also has

the local Masai communities. We encourage you to visit

27. Located in southern Serengeti and with
sweeping views of the Moru Kopjes and
Lake Magadi, Serengeti Pioneer Camp is
ideally situated to offer superlative access
to the annual migration and the ‘Big 5’.
Each of our camps and lodges has an
individual style and feel all of their own.
Serengeti Pioneer Camp continues this
tradition. Paying homage to the mobile
camps of the 1930’s, a time when an
African safari was truly a journey into the
unknown, Serengeti Pioneer Camp’s ‘zero
footprint’ and close proximity to nature
combines to make an unmistakably
distinctive and individual offering.
Comprising of 12-tented accommodations,
- including 1 twin-room family tent - all of
which have en suite facilities including a
flushing toilet, vanity basin and shower, the
tent interiors are designed to evoke the
very best of an era long-gone but certainly
not forgotten.
A dining tent hosts the Camp’s Guests for
both breakfast and dinner whilst luncheons
are taken either in the Camp or whilst in
the bush during what will no doubt be yet
another enthralling day in the Serengeti.
With the ‘Big Five’ and the annual migration
being the constant highlights of any visit to
the Serengeti, the introduction of Serengeti
Pioneer Camp will help to sate the desires
of even the most expectant of safari
travellers. The combination of Serengeti
Pioneer Camp and that of the award-
winning Serengeti Migration Camp to the
north has now made it possible to cover
over 90% of the Serengeti, maximizing the
wildlife experience and increasing that all-
important game-viewing time.

Kopjes & Cats
Although the Serengeti is famed for its annual wildebeest
migration, Serengeti Pioneer Camp is located in the
heart-land of ‘big cat’ country.
The topography of the landscape has proven to be most
attractive to the big cats - leopard and lion in particular
- as it provides not only excellent vantage points from
the kopjes (outcrops of rock) rising above the vast
wilderness of the Park, but also much needed shade for
adults and cubs alike. The cheetah too finds it a perfect
environment as between the kopjes lie vast uninterrupted
plains of grass, ideal for achieving optimum speed and to
overcome the most adept of game.
One night at Serengeti Pioneer Camp will leave you in no
doubt as to the whereabouts of these predators.
As you lie back in your tented room, the cool night breeze
carries the soundtrack of muffled cries of lion and leopard
as they indulge in their nightly activities, whether it be
feeding, hunting or even talking in their sleep.
“Did you hear the lions last night?’ tends to be a repetitive
question often heard at a Pioneer breakfast table. We
sincerely invite you to come and join in the conversation.

33. Internationally renowned for the greatest
wildlife spectacle on the planet, the
Serengeti National Park is by far one of the
most exceptional safari destinations in the
World.
Serengeti Migration Camp is the
embodiment of the ‘camp experience’.
Located on the famous Grumeti River
which is home to resident hippos that
grunt and wallow their days away, Serengeti
Migration Camp has become synonymous
with low-impact, high-action game-viewing
in a landscape that has remained relatively
untouched since the dawn of time.
Hidden amongst the rocky outcrops,
Serengeti Migration Camp sits on the
migratory route trekked by hundreds of
thousands of animals each year.
Comprising of 20 luxurious tents, each on its
own wooden raised platform and spacious
and richly-furnished bedrooms, Serengeti
Migration Camp blends seamlessly into the
environment.
Each of the tents is surrounded by a
360-degree verandah deck creating
the ideal private sanctuary to enjoy the
continual sights and sounds emanating
from the bush.
Migration Camp’s main tented area,
perched on a rocky outcrop above the
tented rooms, possesses a split-level
lounge, a swimming pool, a boutique, a
restaurant and a combination of elevated
wooden-decked platforms that offer views
to the river and the rugged landscape
beyond.
But it is the drama and proximity of the wild
which elevates the experience of this camp
to an altogether higher level.
Whether it is taking a guided game-
walk with one of the resident and highly
knowledgeable guides, or simply the
thrill of being as close to nature’s daily
fight for survival, the sensory feast that
accompanies any visit to Serengeti
Migration Camp will no doubt rival anything
ever experienced before.
Magical. Captivating. Incomparable.

36. One of the more interesting facts about Serengeti
Migration Camp - of which there are many - concerns a
large family that has been living there - free of charge –
since the Camp was opened in 2004.
This same family however can neither be seen feasting
in the restaurant, nor using the broadband Wifi in the
lounge. They can, however, be heard at regular intervals
during the day - and at night - chatting away in loud but
incomprehensible dialects.
One would therefore expect to receive the a host of
complaints due to this anti-social behaviour. Fortunately
this does not happen, and here is the reason as to why.
These gruff and unintelligible voices belong to a family of
resident hippopotami that live within ear and eye of the
Guests’ tents at Serengeti Migration Camp.
But one question remains. Why have they chosen
Migration Camp as their home? Are they just as discerning
as the Guests who have selected this award-winning
Elewana Collection Camp?
The answer is far simpler. The Grumeti River flows
alongside the Camp’s boundaries and, although suffering
from fluctuations in flow and depth throughout parts of
the year, there are several sections of the river where
the water never ceases to be at hippo-friendly depths.
With pasture available on either sides of the Grumeti, the
average-sized hippo – at around 2 tons – never wants for
food in this waterlogged nirvana.
As part of a guided-game walk, Guests are invited - albeit
on tiptoes to preserve a modicum of surprise - to visit
this resident hippo family. Each welcome is greeted with
indignant snorts, a prelude to the evening’s serenade as
the hippos perform their own rendition of ‘lala salama’.

The Serengeti has seen a decline in the rhino population
- specifically the indigenous Black Rhino.
Due to severe increases in poaching both in Tanzania
and Kenya, the numbers of Black Rhino have drastically
declined in the last 30 years. The Serengeti has seen the
greatest decline in the rhino population.
Recent attempts to re-populate the norther Serengeti
have proven successful and this re-introduction
continues at a-pace with the introduction of relocated
rhinos from neighbouring countries, including Zambia
and South Africa.
These projects require additional support to fund those
who keep watch over these magnificent beasts, keeping
all from the ever-present danger of the malevolent
poacher. Tusk continue to raise funds for anti-poaching
projects.

ocated on the banks of a river
from which it has taken its name,
Sand River Masai Mara - Kenya -
is located within the Masai Mara National
Reserve, close to the Tanzanian border.
Situated on a secluded and picturesque
site, the Camp replicates the heyday of
exclusive permanent tented camps of
the late 1920’s. The interior fixtures and
furnishings mirror this period perfectly,
reminding all who visit of those countless
Hollywood movies that have paid homage
to a classic era of African adventure.
Sand River Masai Mara comprises of
16-tented accommodations - including
one double-room family tent. The Camp
is then divided into two separate but
adjoining tented areas, each possessing its
own designated dining and lounge tented
rooms, thereby creating an increased
sense of exclusivity and privacy.
Sand River Masai Mara is an ideal
destination, at any time of the year, for
those wishing to enjoy exceptional game-
viewing. The Masai Mara Game Reserve
covers 1,510 sq km (580 sq miles) and
raises 1,500 - 2,170 meters above sea
level. The terrain of the reserve is primarily
grassland and riverine forest with clumps of
distinctive acacia trees.
The wildlife of the Masai Mara is world-
renowned, with the Big Five - buffalo,
elephant, leopard, lion and rhinoceros –
evident throughout the year. The Big Nine -
including cheetah, zebra, giraffe and hippo -
extends this experience. Even the dramatic
arrival of the annual wildebeest migration
merely adds to an already abundant
resident wildlife that awaits discovery.
Sand River Masai Mara continues to
demonstrate all the qualities that have
made the Elewana Collection the premier
choice in East Africa. With carefully-crafted
interior designs, exceptional standards of
service, and a sublime and carefully chosen
location providing optimal access to the
wildlife, Sand River Masai Mara Camp has
surely become the standard to surpass.
Sublime. Glorious. Infinite.
37.
A Bush Dinner by Sand River
42. We are often told by our Guests that a true African
safari experience is one where a sense of the untamed
wilderness permeates the very fabric of their bush
camp. Elewana Collection’s Sand River Masai Mara -
according to our Guests - appears to have succeeded in
that very challenge.
From the vantage points that each tented room offers
across the Sand River you can sit back in the comfort
and privacy of your shaded terrace to enjoy a somewhat
sedentary safari.
With binoculars in-hand, a wealth of mammals and
wildlife can be spied at all times of the day. Timely and
refreshing room service is but a call away - happily
supplied by your Butler - and therefore a day spent
relaxing at leisure in the comfort of your tented room is
not uncommon and certainly no-less exciting.
This ‘room-with-a-view’ experience becomes a little more
intense during the migration season when thousands of
wildebeest instinctively head toward one of the main
crossing points - The Sand River - on this epic annual
journey. Sand is kicked up by the herds as they rush
down the steep banks. This quickly turns to frenetic
splashing as they scramble across the river’s breadth.
You too can enjoy similar riverside refreshment, albeit
in a safer and more private setting. Each tented room
provides an outdoor hot water shower with views across
the river.
This simple act of ablution is truly an exceptional
experience, one that helps all who indulge to become
that a little bit closer to the African bush.

Wow! and Super Wow!
We have been on two previous safaris. This was by far the most luxurious.
The tents are huge and all have a view of Tanzania across the river where
the baboons, zebras, cape buffalo, wildebeest and giraffes put on a show!
Each tent has a lovely outdoor shower from which you are able to view
across the river as well.

As the evening draws to a close, and yet another
delicious meal has been enjoyed by all, there is no
better way to conclude the perfect day than to sit and
watch the embers of a communal fire drift ever-skyward
towards a panoply of twinkling stars.
Withtalesoftheday’seventsenthusiasticallyexchanged,

that have silently emerged in the firmament above.
Conversations are interrupted by the ever-present and
not-so-distant bush ‘soundtrack’ that reaches out from
the darkening gloom demanding attention.
And as the last of the beverages are supped, and final
anecdotes are shared, an occasional shooting star
blesses all with good fortune and signals the end of
another majestic day in the Masai Mara.

44. The Serengeti, The Masai Mara,
& The Great Migration.
The annual migration of over 2 million animals in the Serengeti
ecosystem is one of the most famous and well-documented natural
wonders of the world.
The Serengeti and Masai Mara migration is the longest and largest
overland migration in the world. The Serengeti plains account for over
18,600 square miles and the migration itself travels 500 miles on the
path from Tanzania to the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya.
In addition the Serengeti and Masai Mara are home to over 70 larger
mammals and approximately 500 different types of birds. Probably the
most impressive part of the migration is the herds of wildebeests that
blanket the plains.
By combining Serengeti Pioneer Camp - located near to the Moru kopjes
- with that of the award-winning Serengeti Migration Camp - located
further to the north on the Grumeti River - and Sand River Masai Mara
in Kenya - located on the banks of the Sand River, it is now possible to
ensure exemplary and unfettered access to the famed annual migration.
As a consequence our Camps are able to both track and then share
knowledge of the Migration’s exact location, thus maximising that all-
important game-viewing time.
Elewana invite you to join us to experience the multitude of sights and
sounds that make this Migration one of the natural wonders of the world.

47. The very mention of the spice island of
Zanzibar seems to stir the soul in much
the same way as it has done for voyagers
down the ages. This tropical island is today
one of the world’s most sought-after idylls
especially by travelers who pursue a purity
that only a true paradise can deliver.
Kilindi Zanzibar is a rarity in the world of
luxury boutique hotels. Originally designed
for Bjorn Ulvaeus, one of the members of
the world famous Abba ‘pop music’ group,
Kilindi is a true blend of the very best of
diverse cultures.
15 eastern-styled domed Pavilion Rooms
nestle amongst a 50-acre tropical garden,
the perfect and intimate retreat for each
and every Guest. This ‘close-to-nature’
approach of Kilindi’s design provides the
true essence to any stay.
The Pavilion Rooms have their very own
private plunge pool as well as open-air
‘rainfall’ shower Pavilions that create the
feeling of being at one with nature.
The Main Pavilion hosts a ‘waterfall’ bar
which overlooks a large 25-metre infinity
pool that seemingly conjoins with the
sparkling warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Dining is an experience in itself. Kilindi
offers a multitude of private and intimate
locales to enjoy the freshly prepared fare
from our Executive Chef’s kitchen. If not
dining in the privacy of your own Pavilion,
the Main Pavilion’s alfresco terrace awaits;
or perhaps choose a romantic dinner on the
pristine sands gently lapped by the ocean
waters; the choice is yours.
With each Pavilion served by a dedicated
Butler, your are guaranteed a personal and
professional service; and should you wish
to leave the oasis of privacy that is your
private Pavilion, your Butler can advise as
to the many activities and excursions that
Kilindi and the island can offer.
Kilindi Zanzibar will reward all those who
venture to experience all that it has to
offer. A favourite with honeymooners and
lovers, any stay at Kilindi will become both
the memory of a lifetime and the standard
to surpass.
Sparkling. Intimate. Radiant.

50. For those of you who venture to Kilindi Zanzibar, it may be
that you are searching for something that is fast becoming
a rarity in today’s modern and bustling world - Time.
Kilindi gifts all its Guests with just that - time to relax, time
to unwind, and the opportunity to press a ‘reset’ button in
a way that very few boutique hotels can offer.
With the world’s fast-paced existence left behind at
Kilindi’s gates, visitors to this tropical idyll can begin their
much needed ‘detox’.
So what is there to do with all this new-found time? Self-
indulgence is highly recommended and Kilindi will do its
best to encourage that selfish part of your persona.
Why not take the chance to read a book, to snorkel in
the clear waters of the bay, or perhaps - for the more
adventurous - learn to scuba at one the dive centres
close to Kilindi?

51. For centuries Zanzibaris have relied of the sea for both
trade and for their daily catch. The sea, therefore, is
central to the very fabric of this historic island culture.
Adjacent to the Kilindi Zanzibar is the small but vibrant
fishing community of Kendwa. Kilindi has committed
itself to helping and supporting this community. With the
help of Elewana and donations from our Guests a new
community centre has just been constructed including
offices, and a fishing net repairing facility.
Plans are now afoot to provide new facilities that can help
repairs to damaged boats. Social and welfare projects to
help with the continued health and education support
for all the villagers are also being planned for the very
near future.
Our Management Team at Kilindi will be delighted to

Open & Natural
The concept behind Kilindi Zanzibar’s design was borne
from the desire to help guide Guests ‘back-to-nature’. The
daily invitation to experience a liberating ‘Rain Shower’
within the open-fronted white-walled Pavilion Bathrooms
is once such way that this zenith is achieved.
Whilst the centrally-placed rain shower pours down cool
refreshment from above, the spectacular views afforded
by the open-fronted portals lay bare the sparkling
turquoise Indian Ocean.
Nearby the constant twitter of yellow weaver birds mixes
with the whoops of the indigenous species of monkeys as
they play in the trees that embrace Kilindi Zanzibar.
The flora too is as rich and as diverse as the wildlife. A
myriad of bright colours and textures abound within each
of the private gardens in which you can soak up the warm
sun, be caressed by the soft ocean breezes and lounge in
the cool private plunge pools.

are often well-kept secrets. AfroChic
Diani Beach is both of these.
Lying south of Mombasa, Kenya, on one of
the most beautiful beaches in the world,
AfroChic is the perfect getaway for the
discerning traveller who wants to simply
‘flop-and-drop’ and enjoy the spectacular
views of the Indian Ocean.
This exclusively intimate hotel - with only 10
Guest rooms, each with their own en suite
bathroom, balcony and sun-loungers - is
singularly personable and highly individual.
In these days of large inventory beach
hotels, AfroChic’s unique and eclectic style
of interiors and designs makes a refreshing
change from the standard alternatives.
From the moment you walk through
the doors, you are embraced by the
understanding of what has made AfroChic
a highly-prized destination for those seeking
rest, relaxation and a personal touch.
Friendly and attentive staff are on hand to
provide those little but special details that
have become synonymous with an Elewana

Miles of expansive and near-deserted
beaches await discovery, and for those who
wish a more active way to spend the day, an
18-hole championship golf course is within
three minutes drive from the hotel.
Boutiques, spas, and craft markets adorn
the local area, and day trips to Shimba
Hills Reserve and Mwaluganje Elephant
Sanctuary add to the Kenyan coastal
experience.
AfroChic is certainly one of Africa’s best-
kept secrets. It is a marriage of romance,
African style and all that is best in Kenyan
hospitality. AfroChic is certainly a jewel
in the Elewana Collection, and one that
continues to shine brighter than ever.

‘It could therefore be regarded as a serious oversight if
these two attributes were not exploited for the benefit
of our Guests and in every way possible,’ commented
Richard Johnston, General Manager of AfroChic Diani

‘Culinary excellence has become central to the Guest
Experience at AfroChic. With a team of highly-motivated
and enthused cooks - all led by an Executive Chef - any
visitor to AfroChic is bombarded with a host of carefully-
crafted choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner - and
very often in between’.
Dishes range from an extensive selection of seafood
platters - all freshly caught from the adjacent ocean - to
creations that represent a more ethnic approach.
Richard adds, ‘As to where our Guests wish to enjoy their
menus, favourite places include dining beach-side, on
their terrace balcony, by the pool or perhaps sheltered
under the eves of a casuarina tree in the hotel gardens.
It’s really up to you.’
AndwithalltheresidentsofAfroChicencouragedtoforget
their daily routines and instead embrace relaxation and

60. Decades ago African safaris tended only
to be accessible to adventurers, hunters,
and the occasional Hollywood actor. Fortunately
these days are long gone.
A safari in East Africa is now accessible to all,
with the ever-increasing trend for families and
groups of friends travelling to experience the
magic of the African bush.
Elewana and SkySafari have therefore
responded to this ever increasing demand,
crafting a range of encounters with adults and
children very much in mind.
Shared experiences are top of most families’
requirements. Elewana Collection therefore
offers, in addition to the SkySafari itinerary, a
host of family-oriented activities which include
game watching with a guide, nature walks,
archery, jewelry making, cooking lessons, and
of course the popular act of face painting.
All activities are performed under the careful
and professional gaze of the Camp Supervisors.
Adults and parents are of course welcome to
participate, although the children often prefer
to have some much needed space from ‘Mum

SkySafari - Elewana’s crafted itinerary that visits
Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and of course
the Serengeti National Park - is becoming the
optimum choice with families seeking a new
perspective on a safari.
Children and adults will be able to see the

62. Many a traveller coming to East Africa
on safari will either be forewarned by -
or leave with - tales of the infamous ‘African
Massage’.
With the majority of Tanzanian safari
experiences being ‘off-road’, the need for a
quality vehicle is all the more important. In
the words of one recent and intrepid traveller,
African roads can be ‘deceptively flat’.
Despite the best efforts of the Park Authorities,
roads can become bumpy and uneven. With
the seasonal rains and the constant use by a
variety of vehicles, many of the untarred roads
become rutted, with some - especially in the
Serengeti - developing a corrugated effect.
These same bumps can cause vibrations
to transfer from the wheels through the
suspension and into the passenger - and
hence the expression the ‘African Massage’.
Elewana’s vehicles and their experienced
driver Guides are the very backbone of
Elewana’s northern circuit. The vehicles
- predominantly Land Rover 6-seaters (4
Guest seats) and Toyota Safari Cruisers (6
Guest seats) - have been specifically for their
reliability, seating comfort, interior space and
ride quality.
Our Vehicles - Easing the ‘African Massage’
Heath Dhana, Elewana’s Director of
Operations, explains. ‘It is essential that the
quality of the drive does not detract from the
enjoyment of the safari itself. We want all our
Guests to look at their vehicle as a haven of
comfort. With on board facilities including
a cold box and charging points for cameras
and i-pads - and even a pull-out awning for
much-needed shade whilst enjoying a bush
luncheon - a day out with us will be as relaxing
as it will be memorable.’

Sisters In Search of a Safari Adventure
‘Imagine my surprise when my sister suggested
we go on an African safari?’ giggled Jenny as
she gratefully accepted an ‘amuse bouche’
whilst watching a blazing orb of orange and
red disappear below the horizon a-top the aptly
named Sunset Hill.
‘With her living in Mauritius, I thought a week
on the beach was a more-likely option. But no,
once again my sister comes up with a plan to
surprise me, and what a surprise.’
Both Jenny and her ‘big sister’ Helena were
indeed safari ‘newbies’. Neither had been to
mainland Africa before let alone imagined
spending a week on safari in Tanzanian’s
spectacular bush, and being surrounded by the
innumerable wildlife.
And whilst Jenny was engaged in a freshly-
made spicy vegetable samosa, Helena took the
62.
65. opportunity to elucidate.
‘I am so glad that I managed to persuade her to
come but now that she is here all I can hear her
say is ‘Wouldn’t Mum and Dad love this as well?
We must bring them back with us next time.’’
‘As for me I have been so overwhelmed by how
friendly everyone has been, and so genuine and
accepting too. John - our Guide- has tolerated
every one of my insanely silly questions about
the wildlife. He has been so patient despite my
glaring ignorance.’
Helena and Jenny were visiting all of Elewana
Collection’s northern Tanzanian lodges and
camps, whilst experiencing the National Parks
and Conservancies of Tarangire, Ngorongoro
and Serengeti.
‘I really didn’t know what to expect’ added
Jenny whilst sipping on a chilled Sauvignon
Blanc. ‘But everything has been like a dream.
So far we have dined under-the-stars, danced
and sang with Masai warriors, visited a local
Masai village and had a ‘cuppa’ with the village
elders, and now I am sitting here wondering
about the next five days and if they are going to
be as magical as the first 48 hours.’
‘I never thought in a million years I would get
to play ‘Out of Africa’ with my big sister. All we
need now is Robert Redford to turn up and all
will be perfect.’
Three days later and with the sisters firmly
ensconced in the Serengeti National Park,
I caught up with them once more to find out
how their African Adventure trip was going.
‘Unbelievable’ they replied in unison, bursting
out laughing in the process. ‘I think that’s the
first time we have agreed on anything...ever!’
‘We have seen the ‘Big Five’ already in the
Crater....,’ added Helena.
‘Wow, that Crater...it was incredible,’ interrupted
Jenny.
‘...and what about the lions that walked past our
car yesterday. I’ve got some awesome pictures
of those cubs. They were gorgeous.’
‘Oh, that reminds me, I was the first to spot the
rhino so you owe me 1000 shillings.’
For a second all goes quiet as both sit,
grinning from ear-to-ear, in a state of satisfied
contemplation.
The silence was finally broken. ‘Mum and Dad
would love it here...We must bring them with us
next time.’
Thisfamiliarstory-line-predictingalargerfamily
visit to Tanzania - was, it seemed, growing more
and more definitive as the week went by.
And as Jenny and Helena sat back in the
Lounge of Serengeti Pioneer Camp, watching
yet another African sunset, they both agreed
that this was ‘definitely the best holiday’ that
they had ever had.

66. The Elewana Collection is regarded as
the pre-eminent choice to experience
East Africa at its very best. However, in order
to deliver those expectant travellers with an
unforgettable safari, Elewana requires some
exceptional help.
It is at this point that we would like to introduce
to you a man called Stan.
Stanford Shao is one of Elewana’s stable of
professional safari guides, called upon to
help deliver an authentic and informed safari
experience to all. With a depth of knowledge
that is both impressive but in many ways
understated, Stanford is indeed ‘the man’
when is comes to being schooled in the ways
of the African bush.
Born and raised in Moshi, a town languishing
in the shadow of the ever-present and all-too-
impressive Mount Kilimanjaro, Stanford, now
38 years old, cannot remember a time when
a passion for Africa’s wildlife was not in his
heart.
‘It’s all I ever wanted to do,’ Stanford confided
during a recent visit to Serengeti Migration
Camp where he is currently stationed. ‘From
an early age my parents instilled in me a
respect for the flora and fauna of the bush,
and it’s down to their encouragement that I
am here today doing what I love.’
Married with 3 children, Stan - as he prefers to
be called - travels across Elewana Collection’s
bush camps and lodges every six or so
months. ‘This keeps me up to date. If I stay in
one place too long I can easily forget where to
find the leopards and lions, or which trees they
are sitting in or sleeping under. I need to form
an understanding of their behavioral patterns
and keep informed. If I don’t my guiding will
not shine and I want to see the same magic in
our Guests’ eyes that my parents saw in mine
all those years ago.’
Stan’s knowledge of the bush is undeniable.
On a walking safari with a group of Chinese
travellers, Stan’s approach to his guiding
responsibilities switch seamlessly from the
serious – when laying down the rules on safety
– to the amusing and anecdotal when sharing
hiscatalogueofthestrangeandoftenamusing
behaviour of the indigenous fauna. And to
everyone’s surprise even the most innocent of
plants turns into an interesting tale about its
medicinal qualities, some of which have been
derived from Stan’s own personal experience.
‘Not everyone understands how Man’s first
medicines came about, and they need to know
that it came from the African bush; for example
the anti-bacterial qualities of some tree barks,
the medicinal benefits of certain leaves for
upset tummies and even how the sap from
an innocuous plant stem can keep your teeth
clean. All this knowledge is slowly being lost
and I can only hope that through my guiding,
especially on these walking safaris here in the

embrace the natural pharmacy of the bush,
and to keep that knowledge alive for the
generations to come.’
Stan’s duties, of course, are not limited to
his walks, although it is quite evident that
he enjoys these times very much. Clutching
his rifle in one hand, whilst assisting his
companions cross a stream with the other,
Stan personifies all that you would hope for
in a professional guide, exuding trust and
confidence with every look and glance.
And what does he think of his fellow
international walkers who are with him during
their short but excitement-filled stay at the
Camp?
‘They are great fun and from so many different
countries. As to their knowledge of the wild,
some travellers come to us with a wealth
of understanding and some come with
none whatsoever. Whatever their degree of
knowledge, I can always find something that
astonishes them and enriches their safari
experience. I haven’t failed yet,’ he says with
a wry smile.
Our two-hour walk saw us traverse the Grumeti
River - famous for the crossing of thousands
of migrating wildebeest between August
and October each year. Along the way we all
enjoyed a series of ‘photo–ops’ provided by
sixty hippo, a young and inquisitive giraffe,
a startled but fortunately cowardly buffalo,
as well as numerous sightings of elephant,
antelope and warthog. Some were captured
instantly to our camera’s memory cards, whilst
others going ‘live’ online as we walked.
Cool refreshing drinks greeted all as the
Camp concierge welcomed us ‘home’. As
cold-scented towels mopped a multitude of
brows, it was evident that the excitement and
pleasure of this walking safari was etched
onto each and everyone’s face.
There is little doubt it was a similar expression
that delighted Stan’s parents all those years
before.

Guided-walking safaris are available at

68. For many of you who stay with us at the
Elewana Collection, the social act of eating
is an important part of any African safari
experience.
But with such expectations comes great
responsibility, and this responsibility is not
taken lightly by Elewana’s Culinary Teams.
Throughout The Collection, Executive Chefs
work in a variety of environments, from the
wilderness of the bush to the remoteness of a
paradise island.
Each Chef carefully crafts menus that pay
attention to the international palate but also
reflect, wherever possible, the unique flavours
and textures of the local produce.
Elewana’s Director of Operations, Heath
Dhana, explains.
‘Freshly prepared food of the highest quality
is Elewana’s mantra, and on this we will never
compromise. Even in the most remote of bush
environments, we ensure that our Guests
receive the very best from our award-winning
Chefs.’
‘Elewana has maintained its high culinary
standards through the development of a
‘Chefs’ Training Academy’, something that has
not only helped nurture new and aspiring talent
but has also become a magnet for rising stars
within the industry. We continue to excel in the
eyes of our most discerning critics - that of our
Guests - and for that we are most grateful.’

69. An Executive Chef -
Designer & Composer
‘The life of an Executive Chef can be shrouded in
mystique,’ comments Jeromy Joubert - Executive Chef of
Elewana Collection’s Arusha Coffee Lodge.
Jeromy - although still young in years - is a veteran of the
luxury hotel kitchen. Starting his career in, of all places,
a mobile cooking unit in the South African Army, Jeromy
has since worked in more salubrious five-star hotels in
Fiji, Thailand and most recently Cape Town, South Africa.
As he calls out yet another order to his Culinary Team
within the domain of his clinically-clean kitchen, pots
and pans immediately emerge and clatter together in
chaotic harmony.
‘I do sometimes feel like a conductor of an orchestra
playing a symphony that I have composed,’ he says with
a charming grin.
‘The day in the life of an Executive Chef is far from the
glamorous image portrayed on television. There are
a lot of early mornings and late nights, meetings with
suppliers, and certainly a lot of attention focused on
quality control.’
‘Then there are the inspirational moments - crafting
dishes that we hope our Guests will enjoy just as much
as we enjoy designing them.’
And as Jeromy completes his sentence so too departs
another order of freshly-prepared dinners destined for
yet more excited Guests sitting in eager anticipation
within ‘Bacchus’, the Lodge’s gourmet dining restaurant.

70. When a 1928 Paige-Graham automobile
turned up in the car park of Arusha
Coffee Lodge, that was indeed an event in
itself.
However the story about to unfold of the
occupants was to be far more spectacular
than simply the arrival of this 85 year old
vehicle.
14 years before, an Argentinian couple,
Hermann and Candeleria Zapp, childhood
sweethearts, decided to escape the ‘rat
race’ of Buenos Aires and take to the road to
seeking adventure and freedom.
Today, and some 265,000 miles down the
road, The Zapp family - as they have grown from
a two-some to a six-some - have now racked up
over 50 countries across 50 continents....and
counting.

A Special Visit - Exceptional Family, Extraordinary Journey
Their children also have some unique
attributes. Pampa, 11, was born in the USA.
Tehue,7, was born in Argentina. Paloma,5,
was born in Canada, and Wallaby, 4, was born
- not surprisingly - in Australia.
‘Living a life on the road presents its own
challenges,’ Herman confided. ‘We sleep in or
around a tent set up next to the car, although
more often than not we meet people who
kindly offer us a place to stay. We have met
so many amazing people whilst we have been
travelling and without their encouragement
and support we would have returned home
long ago.’

71. ‘I try to ensure that the children want for
nothing educationally and we encourage them
to interact with everyone we meet. They have
learned so much more than you can possibly
imagine - from foreign languages to seeing the
world close up instead of just the pages of a text
book. Fortunately they do all this whilst getting
on together. They are each other’s best friend.’
The Zapps have now written four books - all
titled ‘Spark Your Dream’ - diarizing their
amazing travels. These books help finance
their continued journey, currently tracking north
through Central Africa.
With North Africa another year or so away,
Herman - now the complete master of car
repairs to his wooden-spoked Paige-Graham
wheels, - is beginning to think about how this
journey might end.
‘When one door closes, another opens. Who
knows what the next couple of years might
bring.’
That would be 12,000 or so people that the
Zapp’s have now met although the number
of how many more that have been inspired
by their journey would no doubt surpass that
figure ten fold - and with ease.
The Zapps are always on the move, albeit at 40
miles-an-hour, the speed to which the Paige-
Graham is restricted. However short periods
of rest are taken en route at which point new
friendships can be made and Herman can
attend to any running repairs to their ‘home-
on-wheels.’
The children are all a delight. Inquisitive
and playful but respectful and polite.
These qualities appear most natural and
demonstrate children who seem to have
thrived in their eclectic lifestyle. Candeleria,
for lack of a better expression, ‘home schools’
the children and their depth of knowledge of
the world as well as the basics that one would
expect are indeed impressive.
Thank You Elewana
So sad to be leaving this
amazing place. We have so
many wonderful memories
and we will miss you all.

are at Elewana, on sparkyourdream.net. We
wish them health and happiness in their
adventures.
