UKSG has invited three up-and-coming library professionals to provide their unique perspectives on working in the information sector today. Why did they initially become interested in their career? What do they find most exciting and most challenging about their work right now? Each of our new professionals will be asked to give a five-minute presentation about their career path, motivations and enthusiasms, and then it will be over to the audience to find out more!
One of the key areas of strategic importance which informs library strategy and operations is that of data – in all its forms. In 2015 Maynooth University Library brought together a cross-sectional group to ensure efficient and reliable gathering and interpretation of data, with a view to allowing staff to examine the work of the Library as objectively as possible. This has been used in conjunction with softer metrics (feedback from user groups, from peer institutions for example) to inform decision-making processes. Consequently there is now a growing evidence base of broadening metrics, from journal usage to views on library furniture which management can utilise to ensure that our services are as aligned with our users’ needs as possible. This session will detail the work which Maynooth has undertaken, highlight some findings and also consider two other important issues: the impact of this work on staff and the need to not sacrifice every ‘instinct’ at the altar of evidence-based decision making.

The Danish libraries, the Association, the think tank and The Economic ValueMichel Steen-Hansen
Today we have visitors from a Turkey. Therefore, we have made a presentation of the Danish Library Association and our special organization's structure. We will also present the Danish think tank Future Libraries and their study
Economic Value of Public Libraries
Libraries of the Future – Knowledge, debate and Network
The Danish Think Tank has the ambition to:
• Produce knowledge, analysis and cross-disciplinary activities about the future role of the libraries
• Generate professional, public and political debate and awareness of the role of libraries now and in the future
A bottom-up initiative
The Danish libraries face many challenges such as digitalization and changes in expectations and demands on both physical and digital services; lack of public awareness of library services, changes in library user behavior, lack of political awareness and changes in the role of the librarian. The Think Tank was initiated by the Danish Library Association (DB).
The Think Tank is a two-year project, started October 2012, and co-financed by the participating libraries, library organizations and central library players
The Economic Value of Public Libraries
The Danish Think Tank Libraries of the Future & Copenhagen Economics has
conducted the first study on the economic impact of the Danish public library. The
Danish public libraries provide multiple services to the Danish public today,
which overall seems to be well received by the public. However, the
contributions are often measured in terms of library use (e.g. how many books
were borrowed) and user satisfaction surveys, which are far from adequate when
we want to discuss the role libraries play in modern society. This study digs
deeper and provide the first assessment of the economic value of the public
libraries in Denmark.

We believe in International cooperation - Nordic library meeting in Copenhag...Michel Steen-Hansen
In the Nordic library organizations we believe that international cooperation can create a better world. That's one of the reasons why we meet, once a year, with all the other Nordic countries, discussing how we can strengthen cooperation between libraries for the benefit of people and society. (And I do not mention Trump at all)
This year we meet in Copenhagen and have a series of presentations and discussions, which you can see more about here.
Public libraries in The Netherlands: a powerful networkFers
In this presentation I will briefly present the structure of the public library network in the Netherlands, with particular emphasis on the way public library innovation is “organised”. There is currently a community of practice (CoP) organised for every specific area of library innovation which at the same time also addresses officially established national priorities, i.e. lifelong learning, development of traditional library services, education of the young population, etc. Librarians in each of the CoPs share experiences specific to their field based on which they identify future activities aimed at the development of the particular field. Librarians included in this CoP system come from libraries of all types and sizes regardless of the province or region.

Presented at 11th Croatian Conference on Public Libraries: “Public Library Network – Cooperation in the Development of Digital Services and Public Presentation” http://www.nsk.hr/en/11th-croatian-conference-on-public-libraries/
The new director of The Danish Library Association, Mr. Michel Steen-Hansen, gives a short introduction to The Danish Library Association based on a special association structure with local politicians as well as library professionals on the Council.
A main theme of this introduction will be to what degree political consensus is needed in this kind of organizational setup.
The Danish Library Association is organized on the basis of a number of local associations working on regional level. These local associations elect representatives to the Council of the National association. The Council elects from within its members an Executive Committee with ten members including a president, who is always a politician, and two vice presidents, one a politician and the other a library professional.
Michel Steen-Hansen will then introduce some current issues in focus,
including free an equal access in the modern society and some new programs

Speakers: Michel Steen-Hansen, Executive Director, Danish Library Association
