Projects
1. Motion detecting wheel chair
It is wheelchair that has been developed for a patient that is unable to walk and reduces the workload of the bystander.
This wheelchair consists of ultrasound motion detectors to move away from obstacles automatically and also helps the
bystander in his/her work load. The bystander can move anywhere in which the wheel chair stores the image of the
bystander and follows it.
2. Real-time monitoring of aerobic and anaerobic muscle activity using near-infrared spectroscopy
The measuring of muscle activity is very crucial for people suffering from chronic and / or disabling conditions. Most
current devices available in market base their principle of operation on Electromyography, which takes longer time to
analyse the muscle activity. Furthermore, these EMG (Electromyography) recordings can be contaminated from the
interference of electrical and mechanical artefacts, stimulus artifacts and other muscular activities. Due to these
complications the need for other alternatives to be explored. One of these alternatives the use of NIRS (Near infrared
spectroscopy). NIRS is technique which uses differential properties of haemoglobin and myoglobin to evaluate tissue
oxygenation and indirectly can measure regional hemodynamic and blood flow. The wavelengths of NIRS
are differential absorbed by oxygenated and deoxygenated forms of haemoglobin and myoglobin. The project seeks to
design a device which uses INRS to monitor aerobic and anaerobic muscular activity using the principle of infrared
spectroscopy. It consists of led stripe on one side which projects high waveform of infrared light. The infrared light
passes thorough the blood and scatters and is being received by the detector. This calculates the oxygen level in the
blood that stimulates the muscle activity. The future benefits of this device could be in the monitoring of muscular
activities of sports athletes to increase performance and prevent injuries of excess straining
