Illegal cigarette sales in Malaysia cost the government over 2 billion ringgit in 2012. Nearly a third of the 23 billion cigarettes smoked were contraband, avoiding taxes. This led to an estimated 1.918 billion ringgit loss in sales tax and 108 million more in lost taxes, totaling around 2.026 billion ringgit in losses to the Malaysian government.
