This document summarizes research on the challenges science teachers face when teaching subjects outside their area of expertise. Several studies found that teachers lacked confidence and felt constrained when teaching unfamiliar content, as their subject matter knowledge was limited. They relied more on textbooks and had difficulty answering questions, developing activities, and making connections between topics. However, experienced teachers were still able to draw on general pedagogical skills. Strategies for dealing with these challenges included seeking advice from colleagues and testing experiments. Teachers' self-confidence was closely related to their content knowledge and affected how they taught outside their specialism. Developing both content and pedagogical content knowledge is important for effective science instruction.
