HEARING IMPAIRMENT,SPECIAL EDUCATION

1. EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
 Affects language or speech development
 Poor academic results
 Widening of gap in academic achievements
between hearing impaired students and normal
ones
 Children with severe to profound hearing
impairment usually achieve skills no higher than
the third or fourth grade level, unless appropriate
educational intervention occurs early.

2.  Lack of social interaction or socialization
 Communication problems, contributing to
social and behavioral difficulties
 Adjustment problems or serious social
adaptations
 Difficulties with interpersonal relationships

4.  Avoid background noises
 Speak slowly, clearly and loudly

5.  Get the child’s attention by either waving
your arms or touching the child gently before
speaking
 Do not stand in front of a window /light when
speaking
 Do not cover your mouth with your hand as it
distorts speech sounds

6.  Face the child when speaking , do not turn
your back
PROFOUND
 Use your face, hands and body to help
express what you wish to communicate

8.  In classroom situation…the child should be
made to sit at the front
 Hearing impaired students should be placed
in special schools especially for those who
are severe and profound.
 Those with mild and moderate hearing
impairment can be included with normal
ones.

9. MILD
 Emphasis of the important instructions
/keywords
 Allowing children time to find out about the
topic in advance
 Writing new vocabulary on the white
board/flipcharts
 Make sure the pace of discussion is not too
fast in oral lessons

10.  Use of visual clues to make it clear what is
being said
 Giving homework instructions when the class
is quiet
 Rephrasing as well as repeating phrases and
words not understood
 Keeping class noise as low as possible
 Not walking about in class when giving
instructions

11.  Allowing a friend to check that the
instructions are clear
PROFOUND
 Adapting outdoor activities to ensure full
participation and safety
 Avoiding giving notes to the class orally
