Traditional education paths don't sufficiently train individuals to manage or start biotechnology enterprises. What solutions can fill this vital need?
This study examines how institutional change in Chinese universities through Project 985 influenced high-tech entrepreneurship. The researchers find that Project 985 was successful in strengthening beliefs around intellectual property and innovation among university alumni. However, firms founded by these alumni that invested heavily in technology performed worse, since China's institutional environment still lacked strong intellectual property protection and contract laws. While localized beliefs can change, for institutionalization to occur more broadly practices must be viable within the larger context.
Career Planning for Biomedical ScientistsDarren Jones

The document summarizes and explains the findings of a study by Mary F. Mobley and Harry Kuniansky. The study investigated finance executives' views of academicians and their self-perceptions. It found that practitioners believed they had better knowledge of business problems and solutions, while academicians had better knowledge of research methods and theory development. The author explains the findings in terms of specialization creating competitive advantages for both groups. New ideas developed by academicians filter down over time to practitioners through education and exposure to lower-tier academic journals and business periodicals. Both groups could improve knowledge transfer through platforms like business schools where practitioners learn new strategies and tools.

This document summarizes a presentation on seminar issues in management. It discusses 1) problems, issues, and challenges in management, 2) the significance of seminar issues in management studies, and 3) working methodologies for seminar issues. Some key points include: seminar issues help understand practical organizations and shape ideas for academic research; they serve to make academic learning more evidence-based; and allow future managers to understand the governing environment of businesses.
Chief Financial Officers' Versus Practitioners in the Field of FinanceSudarshan Kadariya
The document summarizes and comments on an article that examined finance executives' views of academic researchers. It makes the following key points:
1. It focuses on one question from the original article - whether academic research is relevant to actual decision makers.
2. It provides four points in response: that the author is not surprised practitioners find research less useful; different practitioners may have different views; emphasizing research may still be valid for universities; and the study raises important unanswered questions.
3. It defends the role of academic research, arguing its usefulness does not depend on practitioners' views and that it can enhance teaching and reputation regardless of direct applicability. However, it notes the commentary only addresses one aspect
Article on 10 steps to improve entrepreneurship educationmitecenter
The document outlines 10 steps to improve entrepreneurship education based on lessons learned at MIT and other institutions. It argues that entrepreneurship is very important for job creation and economic prosperity, and that academic institutions can play a central role in developing entrepreneurs. The 10 steps are meant to build an educational experience that produces more successful entrepreneurs, and include making a strong case for the importance of entrepreneurship, exposing students to real-world entrepreneurs, integrating entrepreneurship concepts across disciplines, and providing funding and mentoring support for student ventures.
The document summarizes and comments on an article that surveyed CFOs on their views of academics versus practitioners in finance. It makes four main points:
1. Academic research is relevant to practitioners even if they are not aware of direct applications, as research helps develop the underlying principles that practitioners learn and apply.
2. The survey's conclusions are limited as it only asked CFOs and not other practitioners who may find academic research more useful.
3. Emphasizing academic research is legitimate for university evaluations even if practitioners find it irrelevant, as it develops reputation and benefits students.
4. The survey raised important unanswered questions that future research could explore, such as how research enhances teaching.
The document summarizes an article that examines a study comparing the views of finance practitioners (CFOs) and academics. The study found that CFOs rated themselves higher than academics in practical business knowledge and problem-solving skills, while academics rated themselves higher in research skills. The summarized article then explains these findings based on the specialized roles of CFOs and academics, the filtering of new ideas from academia to practice, and how reading habits correlate with career choices. It concludes by arguing both groups could improve knowledge transfer through platforms where practitioners learn new ideas from academics.
The document discusses the need for MBA programs to rethink their approach and value proposition in order to better prepare students for today's complex business environment. It outlines several challenges facing MBA programs, including declining enrollment, lack of student engagement, and questions around their value added. The author argues that programs need to rebalance their curricula to focus more on developing skills ("doing") and professional identities ("being") in addition to knowledge ("knowing"). Eight specific areas are identified where programs could innovate, such as gaining a global perspective, developing leadership skills, and understanding the limits of models and markets. The author advocates for experimenting with new pedagogies like experiential learning and recruiting more practitioners to enrich
The document summarizes a panel discussion from the BIO-LINK SUMMIT on April 18-20, 2012 about bioscience business and education models. The panelists described various models of collaboration between community colleges and businesses, including a contract research organization located within a community college incubator space, a student-run contract manufacturing organization, and a life science business incubator co-located with workforce training programs. The models provided hands-on learning opportunities for students and services for businesses. Overall, the panel explored how these partnerships can stimulate both economic and educational impacts through job creation, workforce development, and experiential learning.
The document discusses the relationship between marketing academics and practitioners and identifies gaps between the two groups. It analyzes how different business disciplines engage academics and practitioners, ranging from exclusive engagement like accounting to more inclusive engagement like strategic management. For marketing, engagement falls in between due to limited professional body involvement. The document also outlines initiatives to bridge the divide by making academic research more accessible and relevant to practitioners through formats like executive summaries and social media. It identifies key issues to achieve togetherness, such as providing space for co-creation and overcoming language barriers between the two communities.
This document discusses the advantages of a hybrid course redesign for a freshman seminar course on advertising and shopping in American culture. Some key advantages discussed include providing frequent low-stakes assignments and rapid feedback to students, gradually increasing the rigor of assignments, and integrating face-to-face and online work so they complement each other. The document also advocates for a "backward design" approach where learning objectives are set first and activities are planned to provide evidence students have met the objectives.

Fred Brown has extensive experience leading responses to epidemics. He summarizes the COVID-19 pandemic as exceptionally dangerous due to widespread lack of immunity and high contagiousness. Strong social distancing has slowed the virus's exponential growth but devastates economies. Three restoration strategies are suggested: developing a vaccine, allowing herd immunity through widespread infection, or managing social behavior to minimize risk while restoring some economic activity over several years. The last option, a "marathon" approach, is argued to be the safest strategy.

This document discusses how pharmaceutical companies can anticipate generic competition and leverage different strategies. It provides tips for tracking generic drug applications, litigation, and licensing agreements that can provide early signs of impending competition. Additionally, it explains opportunities to use the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway or partner with generic competitors to introduce branded generics in order to compete and maximize revenue as patents expire on blockbuster drugs. The overall message is that comprehensive monitoring and strategic planning is needed to effectively transition brands for long-term success when facing generic competition.

Pharmaceutical globalization: Where are drugs invented?thinkBiotech
The document discusses the globalization of drug discovery and development. It examines factors that influence where research and production occurs such as workforce costs, market size, intellectual property laws, and government policies. Countries like the US and Europe have traditionally led in innovation due to strong markets and patent protection, but Asia is increasing its role with lower costs and a growing skilled workforce. Where drugs are invented is shifting over time, with the US share declining and Asia rising in recent decades.
Using patent information to track globalizationthinkBiotech
This document discusses using patent information to track the globalization of innovation in the biopharmaceutical industry. It examines how location affects R&D and production decisions and outlines three models countries use: weak intellectual property laws to focus on generic production (India, Brazil, Thailand), moderate intellectual property to leverage generic skills and develop innovative drugs (Israel, Cuba), and strong intellectual property to attract manufacturing investments (Singapore, Puerto Rico). Analysis of patent data shows while the US remains the top location for pharmaceutical innovation, Asia is rising and the EU is stable as the US is slipping as the sole global leader.

1. Educating the Next Generation of Biotechnology Managers and Founders Pittcon March 1st 2010 Yali Friedman, Ph.D. – info@thinkbiotech.com
2. Challenges Traditional biotechnology educational paths are not oriented at developing practitioners PhD: Academic research poor understanding of business MBA: Management, strategy, finance poor understanding of science The biotechnology industry is dynamic Can educational programs keep up with change? How can graduates stay abreast of new developments?
3. Why have PhDs been so successful in biotechnology? PhD: Ability to solve hard problems, independently Often accompanied by a risk-averse, reductionist, mindset There has to be another way…
4. Can you Cross-Train Students? Do you really need a PhD to manage a biotechnology company? MS/MBA Programs Combine research with business training “I’m no good at the lab work, why do I have to do it?” The objective is not to train you as a scientist, but to provide you, as a future manager, an understanding of science
