1. Rainbow in a Glass
Here is a simple experiment which will form different colour solutions in a glass to
create a rainbow effect!
What you will need:
• Sugar
• Water
• Food colourings (blue, red, green, yellow)
• Tablespoon
• 5 glasses/clear plastic cups
7 Easy Steps:
1. Line up all of the glasses. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the first glass, 2 tablespoons
of sugar to the second glass, 3 tablespoons of sugar to the third glass and 4 table
spoons of sugar to the fourth glass. The fifth glass remains empty.
2. Add 3 tablespoons of water to each of the first four glasses and stir.
3. Add 2-3 drops of red food colouring to the first glass, yellow food colouring to the
second glass, green food colouring to the third glass, and blue food colouring to the
fourth glass. Stir each solution.
4. Now to start making a rainbow! Fill the fifth glass about a quarter full of the blue
solution.
5. Next carefully layer the green solution until the glass is about half full.
6. Now layer the yellow solution over the green colouring until the glass is about
three-quarters full.
7. Finally, layer the red solution until the glass is full and your rainbow is made!
Top Tips:
• The sugar solutions are mixable, so
the colours will eventually mix
together if left for too long!
• If your sugar won’t dissolve just
add a few more tablespoons of
water.
