WRITEWHAT SHOULD NOT BE
FORGOTTEN.
Isabel Allende – Chilean Author
EDDR 697 draws on prior work you completed in the research phase courses, namely, EDDR 610, 619, 620, and 621. These
courses provide you the opportunity to develop several parts of your dissertation proposal, i.e., conceptual framework, review of
the literature, methods section, and other sections of your proposed research. In EDDR 697 you will be given the opportunity to
combine, refine, and build on, these parts to develop and propose chapters 1, 2, and 3 of your dissertation.
It is also in EDDR 697 that you must defend your dissertation proposal to your dissertation committee for approval before you
enroll in EDDR 698 where you will begin data collection. While you are in EDDR 697, and before your fully transition to the
second stage of EDDR 698 stage, you must obtain CU-IRB approval to actually conduct the study. You may take EDDR 697 up to
six times to craft your dissertation proposal, conduct your dissertation proposal defense, and initiate or complete the CU-IRB
approval process.
The course is divided into four main stages, each dependent upon the completion of the previous stage. Each stage contributes
to the completion of your dissertation research proposal.
In the first stage, you will assemble all the parts of your proposed study, found in courses 620 and 621, into a cohesive and
comprehensive methods section (chapter 3). Chapter 3 forms the basis for the CU-IRB application. Therefore, after you draft
chapter three, you are equipped to complete the application for CU-IRB approval
.

COMMITTEE FEEDBACK TIME LINE
• All committee members (CS, CR) including the
Faculty Chair (FC) are allotted 10 days to review

task

EDDR 697 REMINDERS
EDDR697 is the course in which you write a chapter (1) and combine it with chapters (2 and 3). The culmination of all three chapters together are known as the proposal and chapters
4-5 are known as the dissertation. Along with these tasks, you are also completing and submitting your IRB Documents for university review and approval. So, this is quite a bit of
work in a short amount of time, especially when we have to factor in the time it takes for you to receive feedback from all committee members, edits, and the time it takes for IRB to
review and approve you to conduct your research study. While I know that the goal for many of you to pass EDDR 697 in one iteration I wanted to share that due to all the moving
parts of the 697 course some candidates take two or more iterations of EDDR 697 ( proposal) and two or more iterations of EDDR 698 ( which is dissertation).
It is also important to remember that per our several conversations and meetings the following:
1IRB application and all required documents will need to be submitted and approved by CU before you can conduct your
study.
2.All chapters (1-3 proposal) must be reviewed and approved by the committee.
3.Your proposal should be error-free ( APA, grammatical/mechanical errors). Be sure that you are adhering to
CU's Dissertation Style Guide as it relates to formatting.
4.Remember that self-created data collection instruments will need to be vetted by (2) experts in the field( qualitative).
5.For quantitative research, if you are creating your survey instruments/ data collections tools, they must be vetted by two
experts in the area, and a Pilot Study will need to be conducted.
6.Review your draft chapters to be sure that each chapter aligns with each other. Chapter/research alignment is critical.
7.Remember to avoid using conversational tones, biases, and jargon and be sure to write in a scholarly tone.
By ensuring that all these tasks are completed as well as any additional requirements outlined by the CU
Dissertation Guidelines, the likelihood of you being successful in meeting your personal goals as it relates to the doctoral
journey are more likely to occur.

  • 9. EDDR 697 REMINDERS EDDR697 is the course in which you write a chapter (1) and combine it with chapters (2 and 3). The culmination of all three chapters together are known as the proposal and chapters 4-5 are known as the dissertation. Along with these tasks, you are also completing and submitting your IRB Documents for university review and approval. So, this is quite a bit of work in a short amount of time, especially when we have to factor in the time it takes for you to receive feedback from all committee members, edits, and the time it takes for IRB to review and approve you to conduct your research study. While I know that the goal for many of you to pass EDDR 697 in one iteration I wanted to share that due to all the moving parts of the 697 course some candidates take two or more iterations of EDDR 697 ( proposal) and two or more iterations of EDDR 698 ( which is dissertation). It is also important to remember that per our several conversations and meetings the following: 1IRB application and all required documents will need to be submitted and approved by CU before you can conduct your study. 2.All chapters (1-3 proposal) must be reviewed and approved by the committee. 3.Your proposal should be error-free ( APA, grammatical/mechanical errors). Be sure that you are adhering to CU's Dissertation Style Guide as it relates to formatting. 4.Remember that self-created data collection instruments will need to be vetted by (2) experts in the field( qualitative). 5.For quantitative research, if you are creating your survey instruments/ data collections tools, they must be vetted by two experts in the area, and a Pilot Study will need to be conducted. 6.Review your draft chapters to be sure that each chapter aligns with each other. Chapter/research alignment is critical. 7.Remember to avoid using conversational tones, biases, and jargon and be sure to write in a scholarly tone. By ensuring that all these tasks are completed as well as any additional requirements outlined by the CU Dissertation Guidelines, the likelihood of you being successful in meeting your personal goals as it relates to the doctoral journey are more likely to occur.
