Ecuador has proposed the Yasuni Initiative to preserve the unique Yasuni National Park from oil drilling in exchange for payments from the international community. The park contains enormous biodiversity and is home to indigenous tribes. Leaving the oil underground would prevent over 400 million tons of carbon emissions. In return, Ecuador requests contributions of at least half the revenues it would gain from oil sales. The funds would support initiatives for reforestation, renewable energy, indigenous groups, and sustainable development. Ecuador established the Yasuni ITT Fund to manage donations and issue certificates guaranteeing the oil will remain underground.
