1. Conclusion
Zach Hall period 1
Over the course of this project I was astonished to learn of the relative prices of household amenities that had always been easily at my disposal, the primary culprit being the costs of food. Although I had a higher level of income, and combined with Eddie’s income we were able to meet all of the needs of our household with relative ease, I still found that factoring in the costs of food caused a much more dramatic impact on my overall budget than I had previously realized. While we chose to assume food costs on a higher end of the spectrum, the total cost of around ten thousand dollars a year seems daunting. Another one of the costs that surprised me was just how much money was paid out to the federal government as a result of taxes, the fact that I went from $55,000 to $39,000 without even buying anything helped to put a new perspective on how high the tax rates actually are, as opposed to just thinking of the income taxes as simply a percent.
However this project has also helped me to realize how cheap living can be, if willing to disregard luxury in order to save money. It is easily possible to live a life on a much lower income than I had previously realized. When I heard about the mean household income being lower than the fifty five thousand I was assigned, at first I did not think that such an income was substantial to live off of without a second person to help out with costs. For example, although Eddie and I purchased a home with many luxuries such as a small public gym, a pool, and space in the home that was not necessarily needed while shopping for other apartments we were very easily able to find houses on the opposite ends of the spectrum. These small two bedroom, one bathroom homes were nearly half the cost of our house. Even the price difference on something as large as a home helped me to realize that you can really stretch your money out further than you initially realized. This assignment has helped me to see that although the costs of food and taxes were much higher than I realized, you are able to maximize your dollars purchasing power fairly easily.
