Easter Island is a Chilean island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean famous for its nearly 1,000 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the Rapa Nui people. The island's original name is Rapa Nui and was annexed by Chile in 1888. It is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, located 2,300 miles west of continental Chile.
