2 Ways to figure out the ‘age’ of
Earth layers and fossils
Relative Dating Absolute Dating

Relative Age/Dating
 Key word = relative….which is NOT exact but more
general
 Does NOT tell us exactly how old a fossil/rock/layer is
 Gives us a general idea based on LAW OF
SUPERPOSITION

Below the grass are many layers,
known as strata that make up
Earth’s crust

Areas such as the Grand Canyon have
been weathered over time and layers
are exposed and easily visible…

Law of Superposition
States that upper layers are
younger; lower layers are older

By comparing layers and knowing
that
lower=older
upper=younger
We can figure out the relative age of a
fossil!

 Which is
older…the skull
or the glasses?
 Which is
younger…the
sword or the
laptop?
