The first quake, which registered a magnitude of 6.4, struck
Saturday evening at 4:53 p.m. local time. It was followed 11
minutes later by a quake measuring 6.3, according to media
reports. About 40 aftershocks shook the area, forcing many
residents to seek refuge outside. The quakes hit the towns of
Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province. At least
12 villages were totally leveled, and 425 others sustained
damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent.
