This document summarizes an exploration of earthquake data. It finds that earthquakes are most common around plate boundaries, with larger quakes occurring where plates converge. Nearly half of large quakes (over magnitude 7) happen within 100 miles of a convergent boundary, and over 70% are within 200 miles. Key factors that influence earthquake prediction are stress levels between plates, the time since the last quake, and whether the boundary is convergent or transform. Most big quakes strike around plate boundaries.
