Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Xerox Corporation executive David Schnell (USN, Captain, ret.) serves as the managing director of the Americas Commercial & State Transportation Group, a domestic and international transportation solutions provider. Prior to his work in the corporate world, Captain David Schnell once commanded the USS Ford during his 27 years of service in the US Navy.
USS Ford History
Captain David Schnell retired after 27 years of service in the United States Navy. During his tenure, Captain David Schnell earned several accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. The former commander of the Navy frigate, USS Ford, he managed operations aboard the ship and guided combat initiatives.
The Decommissioning of the USS Ford
Captain David Schnell commanded the USS Ford from 2003 to 2004. On October 31, 2013, the USS Ford was decommissioned after 28 years of service at Naval Station Everett in Washington. The frigate was originally christened in 1983 in California and was named in honor of Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Patrick Osborne Ford, who sacrificed his life in Vietnam protecting his retreating shipmates. Over 125 former crew members, including 14 original "plank owners" attended the decommissioning ceremony for the USS Ford.

Captain David Schnell retired from the Navy after 27 years and now sits on the board of Walden Family Services. One of the nonprofit's most important programs is the Walden Independent Future Program, which works with foster youth before and after exiting foster care to develop skills like cooking, cleaning, communication, decision-making, work ethic, and relationships that are essential for independent living. The program ensures youth develop these skills as they transition to adulthood to provide a solid foundation for continued autonomy, empowerment, and success.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Earning the Meritorious Service Medal
- 2. David Schnell, the director of Christ Kitchen in San Diego, California, spent nearly three decades serving the U.S. Navy before retiring with the rank of captain. Over the course of 27 years, Captain David Schnell commanded two warships. Captain Schnell was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal as well as the Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a number of additional accolades.

The Navy’s Meritorious Service Medal, first introduced in 1969, signifies exemplary service carried out by a member of the United States Armed Forces or an individual serving the armed forces of an allied foreign nation. The award, similar to the Legion of Merit, is distributed to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service in such a way that many others take note of the actions, in particular, key members of the armed forces. This award is thought of as the non-combat version of the Bronze Star. If the outstanding service in question does not entirely meet the criteria of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal may serve as an appropriate substitute.
