struction took about nine
months before production of
the first elements began. In
addition to the usual facilities
such as workers' camps, can-
teen, offices and laboratories,
there are carpentry, mechanical
and welding workshops, a
central store and a rebar cutting
and bending area.
Three basic types of single-cell
box segments were produced
using the match casting
method:
• Approximately 22,100 D6
elements for the six-lane
mainline with a deck
27.20 m wide and 2.60 m
high with a transportation
weight of up to 100 t.
• Approximately 12,200 D2
elements, and 2,300 D3
elements for the two-lane
and three-lane access and
exit ramps with varying slab
widths of up to 15.60 m and
a maximum weight of 65 t.
• About 3,900 rectangular box
girder elements of the portal
frame beams of the sub-
structures.
Furthermore, about 30,000
other prefabricated reinforced
concrete parts of lesser im-
portance were produced at the
yard.
The storage area for segments
and precast parts of all kinds
was approximately 26 hectares.
This corresponds to a produc-
tion of seven weeks
Below some main quantities:
• total concrete 1,100,000 m³
• total reinforcement 134,000
t, up to 250 t/day were fixed
• total transverse prestressing
steel 15,000 t, on the aver-
age 26 t/day were stressed
• maximum output of seg-
ments per day / month: 65 /
1,800 units
• total workforce in two shifts
(eleven hours): 3,500 men

Design and construction
of a 55 km long 2x3 lane
expressway
The elevated Bang Na Ex-
pressway with six traffic lanes
and a length of 55 km was built
to ease traffic congestion be-
tween Greater Bangkok and
Chonburi. The project com-
prises a bridge surface of 1.9
million m² by use of segmental
precast hollow boxes. Alto-
gether approximately 40,000
elements were used for the
superstructure, all produced at
a casting yard at Bang Bo.
About 4.5 km away from the
Expressway, on an area of 65
hectares, the precasting plant
was constructed. The marshy
terrain together with access
roads had to be completely
developed for the production
and transportation of the heavy
prefabricated concrete parts.
The entire production area is
founded on reinforced con-
crete driven piles and surfaced
with a cast-in-place concrete
slab. Altogether, the following
quantities were used: 370,000
m of driven piles 30x30 cm,
900,000 m³ of soil filling,
100,000 m³ of concrete, 7,600 t
of reinforcing steel. Its con- B A U A K T I E N G E S E L L S C H A F T
