Thank you for agreeing to participate in our project.
Our team is completing a research project to enter
in a national competition. We are trying to educate
people in the Capital District to make an informed
choice when selecting to go to urgent care or the
emergency department. Knowing the difference is
important because it can save time, money and
potentially someone’s life. Please note that all
information collected is anonymous. We ask that
you complete a brief pre-test, view our educational
piece, and finish with a short post-test. Thank you

 Urgent Care centers can:
Prescribe medicine
Conduct physicals for job/school
X-ray broken bones
Treat sickness
 Sometimes a better option than ER:
Shorter waits
Cheaper than ER visit

Chest Pain
▶ Common causes of chest pain: heart attack; broken rib; heart burn; infection
▶ Visit Urgent Care when chest pain:
Changes with movement
Worsens when touched
Occurs after eating
▶ Visit the ER when you have chest pain and:
Shortness of breath
Pain that extends to the jaw, arm, or back
Sweating or dizziness
A history of heart problems

Flu/General Illness
▶ Symptoms of the Flu/Cold: Fever, cough, sore throat,
runny nose, headache, vomiting
▶ Most cases can be treated at an Urgent Care center
▶ Go to the ER if:
Children: troubled breathing, no tears when crying, not
drinking fluids, doesn’t want to interact, excessive
vomiting
Adults: difficult breathing, sudden dizziness, confusion,
excessive vomiting

Trauma
▶ Urgent Care can treat:
Minor Concussion- Dizziness, unstable emotions,
sleep problems, slurred speech
Minor Fractures- Loss of full movement, pain
with movement, swelling around affected area
Small cuts
▶ Go to the ER if you:
Lose consciousness
See exposed bone
Feel weak and your heart rate increases
Lose more than 1-2 cups of blood

Abdominal Pain
➢ The most common causes of abdominal pain are heartburn, stomach flu, and food
poisoning
➢ Most cases can be treated at an Urgent Care center

Extreme stomach pain in one area
Stomach pain with fever
Blood in poop or vomit

Allergies
▶ Common effects of allergies are: trouble breathing, swelling, itching, vomiting,
diarrhea, dizziness, stuffy nose, and itchy/watery eyes
▶ Urgent care can treat:
Rash
Congestion
Itchiness
Watery eyes
▶ Go to the ER if you have extreme difficulty breathing and/or dizziness

Burns
▶ Types of Burns:
1st degree: Appears red and involves pain and swelling
2nd degree: Results in blisters with severe pain/redness
3rd degree (most severe): Goes through the skin to muscle
▶ Urgent Care can treat 1st degree burns
▶ Go to the ER if:
You have a 2nd or 3rd degree burn
The wound covers most of the hand
The burn covers the wrist
Pain is uncontrollable

Eye Injury

Serious pain or trouble seeing
A cut or torn eyelid
One eye that does not move in sync with the other
