Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that involves the diagnosis and
treatment of eye-related ailments. Over the years, the field of
ophthalmology has seen many advancements, including developments
in cataract surgery and increased precision in surgeries.
Undergraduates do not gain much exposure to the subject of
ophthalmology. Hence, it is important for them to specialise in the
subject. Ophthalmology is taught as a postgraduate level course to
train students to become specialists in medical treatment, complex
microsurgery and other aspects of eye care.

Those who wish to make a career in this field can opt for an MS, a
Diplomate of National Board (DNB), or a diploma in ophthalmic
medicine and surgery (DOMS). The All India Institute of Medical
Sciences offers an MD in ophthalmology as well. While the MS and MD
are three-year courses, the DOMS is delivered over two years. DNB is a
three-year postgraduate programme recognised by the Indian
government.
Entry to postgraduate courses in ophthalmology is on the basis of a
national entrance test or through state-level admission tests. While MS
courses are offered by medical col leges, DNB courses are taught at
institutes attached to hospitals.

If a student wishes to study further, they can opt for a fellowship in
ophthalmology. The fellowship specialisations include cornea, surgical
retina, medical retina, glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology, etc. Certain
areas such as retinal surgery require at least two years of training.
Students can study abroad as well since the job prospects and scope
are good.
There are many possibilities in ophthalmology as a career. Professionals
in this field can work with eye hospitals, in a corporate set-up, or
establish their private practice.One can consider a career in teaching
and research as well.
