A designer has been asked to mock up an example student profile page in Photoshop. It’s beautiful. The student’s name fits perfectly under the profile image. Their bio is split into two perfectly aligned columns. The design just feels… right. Approvals are given and the production of a website with many different profiles is started. As more profiles are added the design no longer seems to work. It’s starting to seem like the website itself will no longer work. The cold, hard reality of varied and inconsistent web content has hit the project hard. Do we make large design changes or just live with it? To head off this question we should utilize real content as we develop mock-ups. But it shouldn’t just be one set of real content. Delivering the best possible and most robust websites requires us to design using the best-case, worst-case, and every-case-in-between content. By combining the skills of content specialists, designers, and even developers designs will be that much stronger.

Names are longer than the eleven characters used in the mock-up. Bios naturally vary in length from person to person. The reality is that we will have large variation in our content. Rather than addressing these variations after we’ve received approvals and started building a website, we should stress-test our designs with real content from the start of our process. We are in the midst of a revolution. The ways in which software and value is delivered to users and the role that very frequent user feedback plays in the development lifecycle is radically different from legacy models that had software delivered on yearly cycles. The IT processes in place today cannot meet the new demands for weekly or daily releases, so we must change them. But these existing processes are serving a purpose, ensuring the quality, robustness, security and compliance of the software. Today’s processes are centered on the client-server architectures that have reigned since the 1990s, and as a result the steps in the software development lifecycle (SDLC) predominantly involve performing operations on servers (and storage and networks). Further, IT job functions have been established to execute those processes. In this talk we look at key existing requirements such as security and compliance, as well as some new ones such as rapid experimentation. We will rethink processes to satisfy these requirements and propose new organizational structures to execute them (spoiler alert, it is not a plan/build/run structure). Finally, we will detail some of the requirements on the IT system architectures that will allow these marked process changes. Session participants will leave with a concrete framework for transforming current IT practices, roles and responsibilities, and a clear understanding of the key technology enablers thereof.

At Jenkins World 2018, Kohsuke Kawaguchi talked about the need to move away from Jenkinsteins, those single-headed monsters that eat all our food (resources) and steal our peace of mind. Jenkins X, Pipelines as Code, Configuration as Code, Evergreen, and Serverless Jenkins are all important initiatives to achieve modern, fast and reliable software delivery. However… there’s still something we need to talk about and that is team organization for effective continuous integration/continuous delivery. Should every application team own and maintain their own instances and flavors of Jenkins, since it’s all code now? Or do we still need a Jenkins admin team to handle Jenkins for everyone in the department/org so they only have to worry about their own pipelines and nothing else? Or something else, like a CI/CD platform providing out-of-the-box solutions that can be customized by application teams to fit their specific needs? The answer, as you probably guessed, is: it depends! But just like we are advancing our tools to become easier to install, run and update, we also need to think about how to design our teams and responsibilities for transparency and ownership of both the CI/CD system (it’s actually a product) itself and the application pipelines. This talk draws on research and case studies from the book Team Topologies by Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais (IT Revolution Press, 2019) together with first-hand consulting experience from the authors with organizations around the world. Key takeaways: 1. Moving to fast, distributed, and reliable CI/CD systems is not just a matter of better tooling, but also clearer team design and responsibilities. 2. With “everything as code” for CI/CD, application teams can be empowered to own their CI/CD chains if they wish. But with great power comes great responsibility. We need to consider the teams’ cognitive capacity as well as organization size (which btw might change quickly). 3. By applying four fundamental topologies and three interaction modes from Team Topologies, we can describe different ways to split responsibility for our CI/CD system and decide which one best matches the organization and teams’ needs.

This applies to Trello’s web stack too. CoffeeScript and Backbone were great choices 7 years ago but there are better tools and frameworks available now, so the Trello team decided to update its stack. But, how does one tackle this and how do you make sure you continue to innovate product-wise while modernizing its web stack? This is what we will discuss in this session -- main drivers for modernizing, the reasoning for choosing for TypeScript, React and GraphQL and will discuss our strategy implementing it, including two failed attempts. At its core, the challenge of managing Human Resources data is an integration challenge: estimates range from 2-3 HR systems in use at a typical SMB, up to a few dozen systems implemented amongst enterprise HR departments, and these systems seldom integrate seamlessly between themselves. Providing a multi-tenant, cloud-native solution to integrate these hundreds of HR-related systems, normalize their disparate data models and then render that consolidated information for stakeholder decision making has been a substantial undertaking, but one significantly eased by leveraging Ballerina. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
