What Is Dynamic Positioning System(DPS)
A Dynamic Positioning System is a computer-controlled
system used to automatically maintain a vessel's heading
and position without the use of mooring lines and anchors.
A DP System is comprised of three sub-system :
• Power system,
• Thruster system, and
• DP Control system
Power system :
 The power system is comprised of all components and associated systems necessary to supply
the DP system with power.
Thruster system :
 The Thruster system is comprised of all components and associated systems necessary to
supply the DP system with variable force and direction of thrust.
DP Control system :
 The DP control system hardware and software necessary to coordinate with the
other sub-system to maintain position.
How many types of DP System
1. Dynamic Positioning1
2. Dynamic Positioning2
3. Dynamic Positioning3
DP-1 has the lowest reliability and no redundancy.
 DP-2 has higher reliability and redundancy in the main components, such as power, thrusters,
and control systems.
DP-3 has the highest reliability and redundancy in all subsystems, including the compartments
and fire zones
DP System In Sea State :
1. Sea state is the state of oscillation of the sea surface (waves) generated by wind
energy
2. The DP control system influences the surge, sway and yaw motion of ships, and
the heave (z), roll (φ) and pitch (θ) motions are more suited for sea state estimation.

Different types of C.GS
1.Transpose centre of gravity (TCG):
 Top of the centre in 3-D direction
2.Vertical centre of gravity (VCG):
 The total weight of the object is assumed to be acting vertically downwards.
3.Longitudinal centre of gravity (LCG):
 The point where the weight of the ship is balanced along its length.
