and the post operative care unit.
Preoparative area : The preoperative holding area of the past was a waiting area for
patients before surgery. Today it has evolved into a specialty area that is staffed by
perianesthesia nurses who provide nursing assessment, monitoring, teaching, and
emotional support to patients in a fast-paced environment.
The operative system area : An operating theatre, operating room, surgery suite or a
surgery centre is a room within a hospital within which surgical and other
operations are carried out.

10. Different positions of operations
The five basic positions used for surgery are supine, lithotomy, sitting, prone,
and lateral. Improper technique can lead to injury in any of these positions.
Supine In supine position, the patient is face up with their head resting on a pad
positioner or pillow and their neck in a neutral position. The patient's arms,
maintained in a neutral thumb-up or supinated position, may be tucked at their
sides or abducted to less than 90 degrees on arm boards.
11. lithotomy
The Lithotomy Position can be used during childbirth since it provides the
doctor with good access to the mother and the baby. It was used as the
standard position for childbirth procedures, but recently, most hospitals have
shifted to using birthing beds or chairs.
12. Sitting
Fowler's position, also known as sitting position, is typically used for
neurosurgery and shoulder surgeries. The beach chair position is often used for
nasal surgeries, abdominoplasty, and breast reduction surgeries.
13. Prone
The Prone position is a patient position used during surgical procedures that
provide surgical access to the dorsal aspects of the patient’s body
The prone position offers surgical access to the dorsal (posterior) aspects of the
patient’s body, such as the spine, neck, and shoulders. The prone position
produces an increase in functional residual capacity and alterations in the
distribution of both ventilation and perfusion throughout the lungs.
14. Diathermy
Diathermy is the use of high frequency alternate polarity radio-wave electrical
current to cut or coagulate tissue during surgery. It allows for precise incisions to
be made with limited blood loss and is now used in nearly all surgical disciplines.
