DUTIESANDRESPONSBILITIESOF
DISTRICPUBLICHEALTHNURSE
Public health nurse is directly responsible in
assisting the deputy Director of health services in
the implementation of following maternal and
child health activities:
 Guiding the community health nurses/ sector
health nurses /HW(f) in the development of micro
plan for the health sub enters for the
implementation of immunization programme.
 Verifying the proper maintenance of cold Chain at
the district head quarters and primary health
centres.
 Monitoring the immunization sessions held in
various subcenters areas in the district.
 Planning and implementation of mass immunization
programme.
 Immediate response for the adverse reaction
following.
 Investigation of outbreaks of polio , measles ,
neonatal tetanus and other vaccine preventable
disease and verifying maintaining the line listing of
vaccine preventable disease maintained in the office
of the deputy director of health services.
 Organizing containment measures for vaccine
preventable immunization.
 Collection of stool samples from the polio cases and also from
the contacts.
 Mopping up high risk areas for vaccine preventable disease
outbreaks.
 Collection of data related to infant deaths , deaths of children1
to 4 years; maternal death, line listing and investigation.
 Improving the birth – weight recording.
 Improving the institutional deliveries by the trained
personnel.
 Monitoring the pregnancy outcome and the survival of
infants.
 Organizing immunization session in the areas where village
health nurse is absent by making alternate arrangements.
 Detection and treatment of reproductive tract
infection (RTIs)and sexually transmitted infections
(STIs); HIV/AIDS preventive activities.
 She will motivate , monitor and review the
performance of the auxilary nurse mid-wives /
village health nurse in MCH family welfare
activities.
 She will supervise review and monitor the work of
sector health nurses and community health nurses
.
 She will ensure proper utilization drugs supplied
to the health subcenters.
 She will carry out annual inspection of primary
health subcenters.
 District health nurse will maintain the following data to
monitor the various MCH and FW activities in the
district:-
 List of health subcenters and collected data.
 Micro- level of plan for immunization .
 Advance tour programme of CHN.
 Health subcenters wise RCH and immunization data over
a period of year.
 Trained and untrained Dais particulars.
 List of first referral unit / private practitioners and
private hospitals.
 List of community nutrition centre.
 Various vital rates.
 Sample checking in the field.
