David Doubilet was born in 1946 and began diving at age 8, spending 13 years photographing the New Jersey coast. His first photo was published by National Geographic in 1972, since then he has authored over 50 ocean life articles. In 2003, over 15,000 people visited his underwater photography exhibition in Lisbon, where he was considered the most famous underwater photographer, showcasing over 100 photos including a National Geographic story from 2002. Doubilet received his first prize, the Underwater Sara Prize from an Italian magazine, and honorable mentions from the American National Press Photographers Association.

#Altac careers have been described as off the tenure track, but within the academic orbit. These positions are serviced by “hybrid humanities scholars” who work in a diverse range of institutions including universities, cultural heritage bodies, libraries, museums, academic publishing, and the public sector. Roles often include a combination of administration, project management, teaching and research work.
This free, 3-hour workshop explored strategies and tools to help PhD candidates and early career researchers imagine and build alternative academic careers. It included a panel session with several practicing “alt-academics”, hands-on activities and plenty of lively discussion and debate.
The workshop was facilitated by Jo Hawkins (PhD Candidate, University of Western Australia) and Dr Jason Ensor (Research & Technical Development Manager, Digital Humanities, University of Western Sydney).

- 8. More than 15,000 people visited the Exhibition of Underwater Photography by David Doubilet in Lisbon in 2003. The exhibition was inaugurated on 5 May 2002. He was considered to be the most famous Underwater World photographer. The exhibition contained over 100 photographs and included a story that was contained in the Portuguese edition of National Geographic in February 2002.
