The Standard bank joy of jazz held Geleza Kleva and Learn music
tutorials at Dieploot community centre on Thursday. The workshop was
attended by young people from the community, who learned from South
African music legends.
3.
4. The primary focus of the workshop was to provide learners with
information about the music industry, to inform them about
opportunities in the music industry, to strengthen their capacity to
access the music industry and lastly to inspire and motivate them to
pursue their dreams.
Jonathan Shaw, the author of The South African Music Business,
advised young up and coming artists that they need financial support to
make it in the music industry.
“You need money to go far in this industry and you also have to listen to
other people’s music”, he said.
Event producer and manager of Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Mantwa
Chinoamadi, said that there are lots of opportunities in the music
industry and that young people should not only focus on being
musicians, as they can pursue other careers within the industry.
5. “The youth thinks that when you are in this industry you can only be a
musician, so we opening up to say that all of us can partake in this
industry (in different ways)” , she said.
South African Jazz and Afro-pop singer Judith Sephuma emphasised
that they strive to provide young up and coming artists with the support
they need to become better artists of tomorrow.
Producer and music educator Concord Nkabinde said that the reason he
got involved in thes workshops is that he want to encourage young
artists to be independent and to do everything for themselves without
being under any specific record label. He added that record companies
don’t reveal all the information to the artists
“I encourage all aritists to set up their own record label and that is part
of what we are doing with these workshops. I run my record company
on my laptop from home, and I can interact with the world at anytime
and it means you have to be empowered with information and be willing
to learn. This is exactly what these workshops are doing - to plant that
seed and give young people the hunger to actually search for
information”, he said.
