News — 31 July 2015
By: Nhlanhla Mthembu
The awardwinning KwaZuluNatal musician
Mtshengiseni “Ndidane” Gcwensa will be laid
to rest in his homestead at Msinga, north of
KZN on Sunday.
Dumisa Goba, founder of the South African
Traditional Music Awards (Satma) and Velo
Bhengu a representative of Gcwensa Fan
Leadership, called a press conference on
Wednesday at the SABC studios to inform
media about funeral arrangements for the late legend.
The 39yearold musician, also known as Ithwasa langampela, recently died after a long illness.
Gcwensa, who was a founding member of popular group Amageza Amahle which was formed in 2004, has over
the years scooped a number of awards including nine Satmas’ including for Best Song of the Year, Bestselling
Album and Best Composer of the Year.
Bhengu described Gcwensa as one of the most talented artists South Africa has ever produced.
“This was not only proven by the fact that he has won 9 awards with Satma but he has managed to remain popular
until his last days,” said Bhengu.
Bhengu said that all members of the public would be allowed to attend the funeral.
“Everyone is welcome to the funeral service of late legend. Whether one was a fan or not but if you want to come,
the best thing we can do to remember Ndidane at this moment is to have peace in our hearts and welcome
everyone,” said Bhengu.
Goba said that they will do their best to bury the late legend with dignity and respect through the Satma awards
funeral scheme.
“The Satma awards funeral scheme will contribute to his funeral not because Gcwensa was broke but this is the
best we can do for our legend. We will also like to invite provincial government to assist since we are expecting at
least 25 000 people to be present on
Sunday,” said Goba.
Gcwensa’s funeral will commence on Friday with a memorial service that will be held at the eThekwini community
church in Durban.
On Saturday, Msinga residents will host a celebration of Gcwensa’s life and the funeral will be held on Sunday
from 10 am at the KwaMajozi sport ground.
