Various counseling sources state that religion and spirituality play an important role for African-Americans (Sue & Sue, 2012) and that a “strong spiritual base can enhance personal resilience” (Hines & Boyd-Franklin, 2005, p. 93). In addition, counselors should accept “spiritual forces as meaningful phenomena in the life realm and decision-making processes” for African-Americans (Toldson, 2008, p. 173). Considering the information from your text and other sources, imagine that an African-American male named Jay presents himself and shares with you that he has had various negative and disappointing experiences with the church he attends. He shares that he attends a prominent African-American church that has various outreach programs and strong community connections; however, Jay stated that he feels he’s been neglected by his church as none of the elders, deacons/deaconesses, or ministers have followed-up with him about problems he has shared with an elder or two about his past substance abuse. He struggles with the shame and guilt of past use and shared how he’s been disappointed that no one in the church seems to care. He shared how he feels more connected and more at home with his substance abuse support group that meets at the local county health department rather than his church. In addition, he mentions that he feels he’s been “bossed around” by an elder who oversees the ministry that Jay serves in. He’s seen this same elder and other elders exhibit similar behavior with being “bossy” or putting down someone’s suggestion in front of others. He also shared that he has wanted to meet with the pastor and has made several attempts to do so but either no one calls back or that the earliest available appointment is a few weeks out. With these and other experiences, he shares that he is struggling spiritually and feels like he’s having a “crisis of faith” regarding his personal relationship with Christ. (Crisis of faith can be defined as one having serious questions and/or doubts about faith but is not limited to this definition.) He reports still loving God but is questioning the meaning of his walk due to his church experiences. Because of these experiences, he feels the temptation to use again to relieve his distress. As a counselor working with Jay, what would you do to address his presenting problem, and what areas might be important to consider when working with him? Would you incorporate aspects of your faith to help him address his crisis of faith, and if so, how? George and Agnes are faithful members of their local congregation and have been Christians and served the Lord for many years. George has pastored a few small churches and is now the associate pastor of a large, diverse, multi-cultural congregation. George and Agnes are in their early fifties, having raised four children, all of whom are now adults and established in various professions, including one son and one daughter who are in full time ministerial positions in other locations. Another son is a successful businessman and their fourth and youngest son is a high school teacher. Their three older children are married with families and live outside of the medium-sized metropolitan area in which their parents reside. All four children accepted Jesus Christ as Savior at an early age and have been active in various church activities and ministries throughout the years of their youth.
George and Agnes’ fourth son, Connor, is in his mid-thirties and is single. He has kept in close touch with his parents, since he lives and works in the same community and also attends their church. He has been active in the choir, in visitation ministry and in helping with youth ministry. Recently, their youngest son shared with his parents that, for many years, he has had a same-gender attraction. He explained to his parents that he has never shared these feelings with anyone in the family, or with any of his former pastors. Although he said that he tried to ignore or deny these feelings while growing up, by being active in school sports and by dating the opposite sex in high school and college, for much of his adult life he has suffered much inner conflict and depression concerning his inner feelings of attraction to other men. At one, time, unbeknownst to his parents, he met for several months with a qualified counselor, hoping that his feelings would change, but this did not occur. Although he has not counseled with a pastor, he has prayed often about this conflict throughout the years, often with many tears. He shared with his parents his deep sense of “living a life” of having to “cover-up” his feelings; of fearing that others would conclude the truth about him, since he is in his thirties and not married. When people, even his parents or siblings have asked him about marriage and setting down—having a family, he has always answered the question with a light answer, smiling and saying, “Well, I just haven’t met the right women yet.” He has come to the point of avoiding people who try to “fix him up” with a particular young woman they may know, hoping to make a match. From the meeting with my companions on the course work, has extraordinarily affected my view on the idea of a sociology of religion. To begin with is the meaning of sociology which is the study of the beliefs, practices and organizational types of religion using the instruments and techniques for the training of sociology. An outsider might not know that I’m a lesbian and that I am married to a woman. Social Workers additional knowledge of the culture of a member of the LGBTQ community would be very beneficial for not only the Social Worker but more importantly the client. King et al. (2007) argues that (as cited in Alessi, 2013, p. 224)” therapists and counselors still require specialized knowledge to understand how to support a range of sexual identities such as bisexuality; how sexuality is understood by families and how they respond; the difficulties encountered by sexual minority youth; therapist expertise and sensitivity regarding LGBTQ issues; and the effect of therapists’ sexual orientation on the treatment process.” LGBTQ community members endure unique difficulties as those of other cultures so it is very important for Social Worker and others in the helping profession to be culturally aware.
While is it almost impossible to know every single detail regarding a specific culture, having the aware of the differences between cultures is important. Some potential consequences due to a lack of cultural awareness would be possible loss of clients trust and cooperation, doing more harm than good to clients, possible loss of job and even license. Social Workers who are not culturally aware could unintentionally make a discriminatory or prejudice statement resulting in the client/Social Worker relationship being harmed.

A social worker would need to know about what your race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. I am an African American female. I was raised up in church. I am a Christian. I believe in the power of prayer. The foods that I grew up eating are collard greens, peas, pig tails, pig feet, corn bread, chicken, neckbones, and pork chop. I was talk to respect everyone no matter what their age are. My mother did not work. She received food stamps, TANF, and Medicaid to help provide for her family. My mother also received child support. My grandmother and uncle raised me because my mother was always going somewhere. Some consequences of a lack of cultural awareness on the social worker’s part are if you do not know about different religions, you might say something wrong without knowing it. A social worker may offend a client without knowing it by talking to them using a certain tone of voice. You must to set aside culture differences. You cannot be judgmental. You must to be empathetic.

Income and wages are measurable indicators of how prosperity is distributed amongst social class. Wealth, often determined by an individual's net worth (assets minus liabilities), is another indicator that is used to determine class. Wealth for working class families is measured by their cars, savings, and home. As people improve their social and economic standing, wealth may include things like stocks and bonds, commercial real estate, and expensive jewelry.
Wealth is an important indicator because it spans past, present, and future generations. For example, compare the children of parents who can save money and leave an inheritance with children of parents who economically struggle and have few assets to pass on to the next generation. Historically, the creation and accumulation of wealth provides evidence of the legacy of racism, sexism, and discrimination and their role in determining class. Black/African Americans, women, and Hispanic/Latinos have historically been denied the means to obtain assets and grow wealth. Consider the impact of chronic marginalization on the Black/African American community's ability to build wealth. While the income gaps between various ethnic groups may be decreasing, the gap between assets remains wide. Data from the Pew Research center show that the median wealth of Caucasian households is 20 times that of Black/African American households and 18 times that of Hispanic/Latinos households in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2011).
Class extends beyond wealth and other financial indicators. Class also includes details like the amount of free time you enjoy (because you are not working three jobs to make ends meet) or feeling like there is a "right" way to speak and act in order to be heard. As we have been talking about for many weeks now, oppression is viewed as poverty or dependence and privilege is viewed as power or independence. In contrast, religion can be categorized as a form of power as well. Straight privilege constitutes that “norm” that is talked about and is like sitting on top (Starks, 2013). For example, some of the other members that could fit in this category are males, Christians, and upper-class citizens. For example, most males are rewarded in society with better pay, protects the family, and in most cases will head the household. So if you look at the dominance a male has in a family, it is fair to say that in some cases, men have the upper-hand.
A situation that I think we are all familiar with is the “911 attack on the United States”, certainly does not place Muslims in a position where the fact that they identify with some recognizable religious system that grants them a bubble of protection. But on this day, the Muslims definitely demonstrated privilege and religion in my opinion.
Some other things to consider about privilege and religion is, if you are from a group of religious faith, an individual may be rewarded with time off for religious holidays, can worship freely, children could relate to others better, and your religious beliefs cannot be held against you if tried in the court of law (Starks, 2013). Therefore, having no religious beliefs may put an individual in the same category of being marginalized. Stark states almost any religious minority, theistic or not, faces its own unique intolerance that complicates the question of whether the fact that they are “religious” gives them a sort of societal acceptability that nonreligious folks can’t have (2013).
However, Todd et al argues, non-traditional religious can still be religious, can still be atheist, can even still be Christian (2015). It seems unclear that that fact alone offers them any considerable upward mobility or protection, especially if, as described above, they identify with a religious tradition that is characterized by other cultural factors at play.

For citizens in some countries, religious oppression is common and long standing. While freedom of religion is guaranteed in the U.S., religious intolerance still exists. According to the Equal Opportunity Employment commission, the number of lawsuits filed for religious discrimination doubled between 2000–2010 (Pledger, 2011). Social workers must be alert for the complex ways that religious privilege functions. By creating an awareness of the privilege given to some while marginalizing others, social workers can understand how this bias impacts their clients.

A situation in which members of a religion, experience privilege can be demonstrated in one week in the lives of the “Smith Family”. It is 1 week before Christmas. The Smith family consists of mom, dad, and twin girls ages 10. The Smiths are an all-American Christian family. Their week starts on Monday morning where mom drops the kids off at their elementary school. As the mom drops the children off at school, she and the dad can rest assured that their children will be taught and administered by teachers who share their Christian faith. Their children will also have friends who share their Christian faith and values (Adams et. al., 2018). The dad drives his suburban that has a bumper sticker that states “Jesus Saves” to work proudly and has no fears of his vehicle being vandalized while he is at work (Adams et. al., 2018). Once the dad arrives at work, his boss reminds him of the office Christmas party tonight. The dad and his boss take their Christian work-based holiday party privilege for granted as it is widely supported by the other employees as the norm.
The boss makes an announcement that the company will shut down for the entire week of Christmas as a bonus to the employees to celebrate the religious holidays. During the rest of the week, the family continue to shop at stores that have an abundance of Christian items for the family to practice their faith and celebrate the Christian Christmas holiday while being greeted warmly with salutations “Merry Christmas” (Adams et. al., 2018). Later that Sunday morning, the Smith family attend observed Christmas services with their church congregation where they’re able to worship freely, without fear of violence or threat (Adams et. al., 2018).

Beethoven is the only composer to whom an entire chapter in our textbook is dedicated. Consequently, from a stylistic point of view we can conclude that: there is music before Beethoven, Beethoven’s music, and music after Beethoven. In Discussion 8 the class considered the Classical and the Romantic style traits found in all four movements of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Which parts of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony are Classically derived and which parts are Romantically inspired? Start by comparing and contrasting how the sonata form is used by Beethoven as opposed to the sonata form in the earlier symphonies of the Classical composers, such as Haydn and Mozart. Next, briefly mention the Classically and Romantically inspired features of the final three movements of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

Income and wages are measurable indicators of how prosperity is distributed amongst social class. Wealth, often determined by an individual's net worth (assets minus liabilities), is another indicator that is used to determine class. Wealth for working class families is measured by their cars, savings, and home. As people improve their social and economic standing, wealth may include things like stocks and bonds, commercial real estate, and expensive jewelry.
Wealth is an important indicator because it spans past, present, and future generations. For example, compare the children of parents who can save money and leave an inheritance with children of parents who economically struggle and have few assets to pass on to the next generation. Historically, the creation and accumulation of wealth provides evidence of the legacy of racism, sexism, and discrimination and their role in determining class. Black/African Americans, women, and Hispanic/Latinos have historically been denied the means to obtain assets and grow wealth. Consider the impact of chronic marginalization on the Black/African American community's ability to build wealth. While the income gaps between various ethnic groups may be decreasing, the gap between assets remains wide. Data from the Pew Research center show that the median wealth of Caucasian households is 20 times that of Black/African American households and 18 times that of Hispanic/Latinos households in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2011).
Class extends beyond wealth and other financial indicators. Class also includes details like the amount of free time you enjoy (because you are not working three jobs to make ends meet) or feeling like there is a "right" way to speak and act in order to be heard. As we have been talking about for many weeks now, oppression is viewed as poverty or dependence and privilege is viewed as power or independence. In contrast, religion can be categorized as a form of power as well. Straight privilege constitutes that “norm” that is talked about and is like sitting on top (Starks, 2013). For example, some of the other members that could fit in this category are males, Christians, and upper-class citizens. For example, most males are rewarded in society with better pay, protects the family, and in most cases will head the household. So if you look at the dominance a male has in a family, it is fair to say that in some cases, men have the upper-hand.
A situation that I think we are all familiar with is the “911 attack on the United States”, certainly does not place Muslims in a position where the fact that they identify with some recognizable religious system that grants them a bubble of protection. But on this day, the Muslims definitely demonstrated privilege and religion in my opinion.
Some other things to consider about privilege and religion is, if you are from a group of religious faith, an individual may be rewarded with time off for religious holidays, can worship freely, children could relate to others better, and your religious beliefs cannot be held against you if tried in the court of law (Starks, 2013). Therefore, having no religious beliefs may put an individual in the same category of being marginalized. Stark states almost any religious minority, theistic or not, faces its own unique intolerance that complicates the question of whether the fact that they are “religious” gives them a sort of societal acceptability that nonreligious folks can’t have (2013).
However, Todd et al argues, non-traditional religious can still be religious, can still be atheist, can even still be Christian (2015). It seems unclear that that fact alone offers them any considerable upward mobility or protection, especially if, as described above, they identify with a religious tradition that is characterized by other cultural factors at play.

For citizens in some countries, religious oppression is common and long standing. While freedom of religion is guaranteed in the U.S., religious intolerance still exists. According to the Equal Opportunity Employment commission, the number of lawsuits filed for religious discrimination doubled between 2000–2010 (Pledger, 2011). Social workers must be alert for the complex ways that religious privilege functions. By creating an awareness of the privilege given to some while marginalizing others, social workers can understand how this bias impacts their clients.

A situation in which members of a religion, experience privilege can be demonstrated in one week in the lives of the “Smith Family”. It is 1 week before Christmas. The Smith family consists of mom, dad, and twin girls ages 10. The Smiths are an all-American Christian family. Their week starts on Monday morning where mom drops the kids off at their elementary school. As the mom drops the children off at school, she and the dad can rest assured that their children will be taught and administered by teachers who share their Christian faith. Their children will also have friends who share their Christian faith and values (Adams et. al., 2018). The dad drives his suburban that has a bumper sticker that states “Jesus Saves” to work proudly and has no fears of his vehicle being vandalized while he is at work (Adams et. al., 2018). Once the dad arrives at work, his boss reminds him of the office Christmas party tonight. The dad and his boss take their Christian work-based holiday party privilege for granted as it is widely supported by the other employees as the norm.
The boss makes an announcement that the company will shut down for the entire week of Christmas as a bonus to the employees to celebrate the religious holidays. During the rest of the week, the family continue to shop at stores that have an abundance of Christian items for the family to practice their faith and celebrate the Christian Christmas holiday while being greeted warmly with salutations “Merry Christmas” (Adams et. al., 2018). Later that Sunday morning, the Smith family attend observed Christmas services with their church congregation where they’re able to worship freely, without fear of violence or threat (Adams et. al., 2018).

Beethoven is the only composer to whom an entire chapter in our textbook is dedicated. Consequently, from a stylistic point of view we can conclude that: there is music before Beethoven, Beethoven’s music, and music after Beethoven. In Discussion 8 the class considered the Classical and the Romantic style traits found in all four movements of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Which parts of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony are Classically derived and which parts are Romantically inspired? Start by comparing and contrasting how the sonata form is used by Beethoven as opposed to the sonata form in the earlier symphonies of the Classical composers, such as Haydn and Mozart. Next, briefly mention the Classically and Romantically inspired features of the final three movements of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

- 1. Due to the nature of this question, the first post will be due Thursday, 19 May 2016. The second post will still be due Saturday. Various counseling sources state that religion and spirituality play an important role for African-Americans (Sue & Sue, 2012) and that a “strong spiritual base can enhance personal resilience” (Hines & Boyd-Franklin, 2005, p. 93). In addition, counselors should accept “spiritual forces as meaningful phenomena in the life realm and decision-making processes” for African-Americans (Toldson, 2008, p. 173). Considering the information from your text and other sources, imagine that an African-American male named Jay presents himself and shares with you that he has had various negative and disappointing experiences with the church he attends. He shares that he attends a prominent African-American church that has various outreach programs and strong community connections; however, Jay stated that he feels he’s been neglected by his church as none of the elders, deacons/deaconesses, or ministers have followed-up with him about problems he has shared with an elder or two about his past substance abuse. He struggles with the shame and guilt of past use and shared how he’s been disappointed that no one in the church seems to care. He shared how he feels more connected and more at home with his substance abuse support group that meets at the local county health department rather than his church. In addition, he mentions that he feels he’s been “bossed around” by an elder who oversees the ministry that Jay serves in. He’s seen this same elder and other elders exhibit similar behavior with being “bossy” or putting down someone’s suggestion in front of others. He also shared that he has wanted to meet with the pastor and has made several attempts to do so but either no one calls back or that the earliest available appointment is a few weeks out. With these and other experiences, he shares that he is struggling spiritually and feels like he’s having a “crisis of faith”
- 2. regarding his personal relationship with Christ. (Crisis of faith can be defined as one having serious questions and/or doubts about faith but is not limited to this definition.) He reports still loving God but is questioning the meaning of his walk due to his church experiences. Because of these experiences, he feels the temptation to use again to relieve his distress. As a counselor working with Jay, what would you do to address his presenting problem, and what areas might be important to consider when working with him? Would you incorporate aspects of your faith to help him address his crisis of faith, and if so, how? As you think about this question, think about what “categories” to which Jay may belong and include this as part of your response (no citations needed for the “categories” piece). This is a common struggle among Black/African-American women regarding their identity about how they should look. I bring this to your attention as this is not only an issue among other races about comments made towards African-Americans but also even an issue within the Black community.
