D-STAR is a digital voice and data protocol for amateur radio developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League. It uses 2 modes - digital voice (DV) at 3600 bps and digital data (DD) at 128 kbps. DV has a total bandwidth of 6.25 kHz while DD uses 130 kHz. D-STAR allows local and long distance communication via repeaters and the internet. It uses a calling system to route communications between stations and repeaters. Various homebrew and commercial devices exist to allow interfacing D-STAR with computers over the internet.
