4. Introduction
• Anemia is a condition in which the red blood cells
have lower hemoglobin level than the normal and
consequently their oxygen-carrying capacity is
insufficient to meet the body’s physiologic needs.
• Manifestation of various underlying deficiency and
diseases.
• Affects development of children, increases maternal
mortality, and reduces work efficiency.

The normal levels are:
• Women: 12 g/dl
• Men: 13 g/dl
• Children: 11 - 16 g/dl
• Pregnant women: 11 g/dl
