Domestic violence is a serious problem in the United States, disproportionately affecting women. It is the leading cause of injury for women ages 15-44. Women experience domestic violence at alarming rates - 1 in 4 will experience it in their lifetime, and 40-60% of nightly police calls are for domestic disputes. Resources for victims are inadequate compared to resources for animal shelters, and the justice system deals harshly with women who kill their attackers compared to men who kill their partners.
