Gopher is a TCP/IP application layer protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet. It was released in 1991 by researchers at the University of Minnesota and provided a file-like hierarchical system with a simple syntax that could be created quickly and inexpensively while extending the file system metaphor with searches. Gopher services became established as the World Wide Web was still in its early stages in 1991.
