Experience the power and beauty of East Asian
culture,language,and ecology in the Hiroshima
Peace Park and the South Korean DMZ.
Come learn about the
practical and symbolic
work of environmental
peacebuilding in South
Korea and Japan.
You'll study these
conflicts in the classroom
before traveling to both the South Korean side of
the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Hiroshima
Peace Park in Japan,to experience the legacy of
memories and emotions of the Korean War and
the lasting effects of the USdropping the Atomic
Bomb on Hiroshima during WWII.
In the South Korean DMZ you will learn more
about how the militarized border turned into a de
facto conservation zone, and is now being used as
a tool for environmental diplomacy and the
challenges of using it to promote peace between the
two Koreas since the Korean War ended in the 1953.
At the Hiroshima Peace Park
you'll consider how the
language of peace and a built
environment is utilized to
promote healing and
cooperation between the
United States and Japan.since
1954.
Stay in traditional Japanese and Korean guesthouses.
Enjoy typical cuisine, from traditional tea ceremonies to
delicious street-food,to bento boxes, and of course
noodles, dumplings and kimchi. Hike through temples,
memorials,observatories and nature trails to
experience a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the
Military Demarcation Line at the 38th parallel. Round
out the expedition with a beautiful ferry ride to
Miyajima Island off the coast of Hiroshima in the Seto
Inland Sea.
