Hiroshima Peace Park and
The Sout h Korean DMZ
International Peace Park Expeditions is a non-profit
organization founded in 2009.
We believe that meeting the challenge of the Paris
Accord concerning climate change, and the UN
Sustainable Development Goals is going to require a
generation of conflict sensitive, environmentally
sustainable, and culturally aware professionals in all
fields to address our shared, interconnected, global
challenges.
To meet these global environmental challenges we
empower the next generation of leaders to
understand the power of environmental
peacebuilding through field-based experiential
learning.
We offer:
- Accredited academic expeditions in partnership
with major U.S. universities.
- Fellowships and Embedded Fellowships abroad
with our international partners.
- Documentary films in the Transcending
Boundariesseries,.
- Peace and Conflict Impact Assessment reports
on transboundary protected areas and
international peace parks.
Our expeditions get students out of the classroom
and into the real world where we apply a
multi-disciplinary approach through place-based,
experiential learning. Meet the experts, explore the
ecology, and immerse yourself in the culture.

Experience the power and beauty of East Asian
culture,language,and ecology in the Hiroshima
Peace Park and the South Korean DMZ.
Come learn about the
practical and symbolic
work of environmental
peacebuilding in South
Korea and Japan.
You'll study these
conflicts in the classroom
before traveling to both the South Korean side of
the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Hiroshima
Peace Park in Japan,to experience the legacy of
memories and emotions of the Korean War and
the lasting effects of the USdropping the Atomic
Bomb on Hiroshima during WWII.
In the South Korean DMZ you will learn more
about how the militarized border turned into a de
facto conservation zone, and is now being used as
a tool for environmental diplomacy and the
challenges of using it to promote peace between the
two Koreas since the Korean War ended in the 1953.
At the Hiroshima Peace Park
you'll consider how the
language of peace and a built
environment is utilized to
promote healing and
cooperation between the
United States and Japan.since
1954.
Stay in traditional Japanese and Korean guesthouses.
Enjoy typical cuisine, from traditional tea ceremonies to
delicious street-food,to bento boxes, and of course
noodles, dumplings and kimchi. Hike through temples,
memorials,observatories and nature trails to
experience a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the
Military Demarcation Line at the 38th parallel. Round
out the expedition with a beautiful ferry ride to
Miyajima Island off the coast of Hiroshima in the Seto
Inland Sea.
Formoreinformation:
Just because a war hasendedor that
violence in a particular location has
ceased, doesnot mean that there are not
lingeringscarsandpainful memories
fromthe conflict.
