Aleutia Intersolar 2015: Scaling Energy Access in AfricaMike Rosenberg
Delivered at Intersolar Conference in Munich June 10th: premier gathering in renewable energy community.
Aleutia's solar classrooms (366 in 8 African countries) and clinics (Nigeria and Ghana) could be equipped with additional solar panels, batteries and equipment to provide a cooperative microgrid for the surrounding community: communties that might be off grid for another decade. And ensure the clinic (a social anchor) always has power for lights, equipment sterilisers and vaccine refridgeration.
In this way, the challenge of security, land, and roof access is already taken care of so the cost of creating permanent solar power could be as low as $2 per watt, allowing metered power at the same price we pay in the West ($0.10 per kilowatt hour)) instead of what is costs from a small generator ($1) or the equivalent light from kerosene ($10). Pico Solar projects have sought to replace kerosene but they can only provide led lights and USB charging and are very expensive for the amount of power they produce.
The best way to power the next level of the pyramid (fridges, fans, TVs) is by metering it and by using the same larger, more commoditised (thus cheaper) Solar Panels, Lithium batteries and AC Inverters.
