Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus, primarily of type 1 diabetes, characterized by severe insulin deficiency which can be precipitated by factors such as infection or non-compliance with medication. It involves pathological processes including insulin deficiency leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and signs including Kussmaul breathing and fruity breath, and is diagnosed based on diagnostic criteria and confirmed with investigations showing high blood glucose, ketones, and acidosis. Management involves fluid resuscitation, insulin therapy, electrolyte replacement, and treating any underlying conditions, while complications can be prevented through education and compliance with treatment.
