Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth 2013
Medicine, Health, and Society (World Medical Anthropology)
Students learn how disease, health, and healing are culturally constructed. Examine the role of culture in
diagnosing, understanding, and treating disease and illness. Use case studies from around the world and at
home to understand the relationships between health and culture, from trance dancing among the
Ju/’hoansi in Africa to bedside manner in American hospitals. Our journey will continue with a critical
examination of mind/body interaction in medicine. The latter part of the course was to focus particularly
on “the body”—the primary medium through which human beings experience the world. Students focus
on specific themes including disability, organ theft, plastic surgery, and masculinity and femininity as
products of culture. Through a variety of activities and anthropological experiments, students gain an
understanding of cross-cultural differences in medicine and healing.
4. Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth 2013
CTY: Academic Explorations/ Bioethics
Students learn about scientific issues, such as stem cell research and genetic testing, while beginning to
address the overarching questions that philosophers and scientists face.
Bioethics first introduces students to some of the classical foundations of ethical reasoning; they examine
the underpinnings of logical argumentation as well as philosophical methodologies. Next, students apply
these philosophical frameworks to engage complex ethical dilemmas ranging from experimental drug
trials to abortion for the purpose of avoiding genetic defects. As students critically confront issues posed
by popular media sources and the scientific community, they analyze primary philosophical works,
participate in discussions and debates, and write analytical essays.
Brown University Summer Program 2012
Understanding the Human Body: An Exploration of Anatomy
Students learn how your body's components work as one, to keep you going every day.
Hands-on dissection of various animal organs, using prepared human tissue slides, as well as models, we
will investigate the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and nervous systems, and how they are all
connected. Students learn more about of what happens inside a doctor’s office when we use a variety of
medical devices including the stethoscope, Babinski hammer, sphygmomanometer, electrocardiogram and
electromyogram to assess our vital body functions under various conditions. Students also became
familiar with four of the human body’s systems. They experience how to flap a freshly dissected chicken
wing by manipulating the extensor and flexor muscles in the forearm of the wing. They experience how to
eject fluid from a sheep heart and dissect the heart. They dissect a sheep brain and experience the inner
workings of the cow eye. Students will become knowledgeable with the equipment to assess muscle force
and heart activity on their lab partner under various physiologic conditions. Also, they carry out sensory
experiments to further their understanding about the nervous system

Graphic Novel Writing
Students discover how graphic novels use words and images to expand traditional narrative structures and
conventions. By examining literary techniques such as tone, flashback, and characterization, as well as
visual elements such as framing, shading, and perspective, students analyze how artists and writers marry
visual art and literature. Throughout the session, students apply their knowledge of the graphic novel in
formal critical essays and in creative pieces that explore techniques of sequential art, such as layout and
plot breakdowns.
