Welcome everyone to the Greater Manchester Home Watch Conference DF – My name is Dawn Fox and I am a director of Fullcircle Community Interest Company which is a not for profit organisation based in Oldham and we work with children, young people and community groups. JS – My name is Jane Smith …………………………………………………
The focus of our workshop is to look at how you as Home Watch coordinators and members could get a wider representation of members in your Home watch schemes, in particular we are going to focus on involving young people in your schemes.
We are going to tell you a little bit about our Junior Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Both Jane and I have worked in the Chadderton area of Oldham for over 8 years and we have developed relationships with the children, young people, parents and residents within the community. WHY? Why we set up our scheme - I am sure you are aware, young people spend a lot of time outdoors with their friends, in local parks or on the streets they are always out and about in their own communities and they tend to know who lives where, who is doing what – they are very observant – they are the eyes and ears of a community. As a youth worker, the young people talk to me in confidence, in particular if something had happened in their community – in particular if a crime had been committed - they would usually tell me about it and if they knew, they would tell me who had committed the crime. WHAT? What did we do? – Both myself and Jane, started our junior neighbourhood watch scheme because we believed, our scheme could help overcome the negativity associated with young people in today's society and it would help to build relationships between the young and the old The main principles of our scheme are much the same as the principles of the Home Watch and Neighbourhood Watch schemes.............. It is where people come together to make their communities safer and better places to live, and to help bring back good old community spirit It aims to help reduce crime, the fear of crime and to prevent crime by reducing the opportunity for crime To help combat crime – by increasing vigilance, and encouraging young people to report crimes and to tell someone if they had concerns or noticed anything strange within their communities And it allows young people to share their concerns regarding fear of crime, and they help to identify solutions to local problems WHO? Who we work with – we work with young people aged between 10 – 16 which live in South Chadderton, the young people are involved because they want to be! We have choose to limit the number of young people involved in the scheme to a maximum of 8 because of safeguarding reasons
Both Jane and I developed a 12 month structured programme, which incorporated educational sessions and community audits (walk abouts). The education sessions were age specific, enjoyable, fun and young people learnt important safety advice which they could pass on to their families and friends. Sessions included crime prevention, personal safety, types of crimes, how to report crime, and who to report crime too. The young people were able to put this learning into practice when conducting community walkabouts. They were able to educate and inform the local community on crime prevention initiatives such as home security; car security etc and we helped to give out information to the residents on the current crime patterns in the South Chadderton area. Our top tip is ....... it is essential, to run a junior neighbourhood watch scheme in partnership , our scheme would not work if both organisations were not involved!
It is about time, we had a rest and let you do some talking ...... each Group will have 10 minutes to answer the question on the flip chart and after your 10 minutes is up we will pass each of the flipchart questions onto the next group There are 3 questions in total and you will all have the opportunity to answer each question. The information will be collated and fed back to conference during the plenary section
We are very limited for time, however if anyone has a specific question they would like to ask, we will do our best to answer it. Or if you prefer, you can come and have a chat with me or Jane during lunchtime. We would like to thank you for attending our workshop and for your input into the session, please feel free to contact us after today if you wish to
