1. Dear Lions of District 29-I:
It seems like only yesterday that I was asked to be a candidate for Second Vice
District Governor. Two years have gone by and I am going to step into the role
as governor for your district. I am looking forward to a great Lion year with high expectations for all of
the Lions in our district. I encourage all of you to work hard to make your communities a better place to
live. You can accomplish this through meaningful projects and a commitment to improving the overall
health of your Lions Club. A healthier club will enable you to better serve the community in which you
live.
Many of the Lions in District 29-I have come to know me over the years but for those of you who do
not know me I will give you a brief snapshot of my Lion life. I joined the Ridgeley Lions Club in 1981
and became their club president in 1983-84. In 1988 I transferred my membership to the Fort Ashby
Lions Club after moving to the Fort Ashby community. I served in a variety of offices including tail
twister, vice president, secretary and president. At the district level I have served on four different
cabinets and held the offices of cabinet secretary/treasurer, zone chairperson, and second and first vice
governor.
As a former educator and coach, I was trained to set goals for my students and help them strive to
achieve those goals. I would encourage all of the clubs in District 29-I to set meaningful goals and strive
to meet the goals that they have adopted. Before setting club goals, I would like all of you to consider
conducting a “community needs assessment.” The form for this assessment can be found on the Lions
Clubs International web site. After considering your community needs, goals should be established that
will determine the actions necessary for success. Goals could be both long and short term but most of
all they should be achievable and realistic, given the parameters and the dynamics of your club. As your
governor, I believe that together we can have a year with a climate of positive attitude and improvement
which will lead to the successful achievement of your goals and fulfillment of higher expectations.
As I travel throughout the district you will become aware of my theme for this year,” Guiding
Through Service.” As a teacher and counselor, I devoted the better part of my adult life guiding others
through difficult decisions and career choices. I believe that I can transfer my skills to the Lions life and
continue to help the Lions of our district make better decisions concerning their clubs and services. I
look forward to meeting each and every one of you as I conduct my visits and training sessions. I hope
that all of you will want to attend the District 29-I Fall Conference at the newly constructed Canaan
Valley Resort in October. I look forward to meeting you at leadership school in January and renewing
your friendship at the multi-district state convention in May. Finally, I challenge every Lion in 29-I to
adopt my Motto for the year “Each One Reach One.” If all of us can bring one new member into our
lion pride we will reach membership numbers that have not been seen in West Virginia for a very long
time.

4. DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S CONTEST RULES 2014-2015
DISTRICT 29I
“GUIDING THROUGH SERVICE”
PURPOSE: To promote membership growth and retention within our clubs and to encourage leadership
development among individual Lions within our District. To ensure timely reporting by club officers and
to maintain fiscal responsibility of all clubs.
AWARDS: First, second and third place for both large clubs (more than 35 members as of June 30) and
small clubs (35 or fewer member as of June 30).
RULES: Contest begins on July 1 and ends on April 15, 2015. Activities must be reported on the MMR
and MAR reports submitted to the District Governor, First and Second Vice District Governors, Zone
Chairperson, and the Contest Chairperson. A copy of the reports must be received by the 10th of the
following month by he contest chairperson: LION MARK CONRAD, Rt. 5 Box 167 Keyser, WV, 26726.

2014-2015
PURPOSE: To promote awareness of the services and activities that the Lions Club provides to the local
community. Publicity increases public awareness which promotes membership growth, increased member
involvement and pride within your club.
AWARDS: First, second and third place for both large clubs and small clubs as described for visitation.
RULES: Contest begins on July 1, 2014 and ends on April 15, 2015. All items of publicity must be
postmarked or e-mailed to the contest chairperson by the 10th day of the month following the publication
or broadcasting of the event. Only one article, airing or telecast per day per event will be counted per
event. Where radio or TV is utilized, proof of the broadcast must be signed by the reporter, station
manager or director.

PURPOSE: To promote visitation between clubs, to encourage the sharing of ideas and goals
between our clubs and to form and nurture friendships among Lions.
AWARDS: First, second and third place for both large clubs (more than 3 members as of June 30, 2014)
and small clubs (35 members or less as of June 30, 2014).
RULES: Contest begins on July 1, 2014 and ends on April 15, 2015. The District Governor and the
FVDG and SVDG will not be counted for visitation. Visitation slips must be verified by the host club.
Visitation slips for the preceding month visit must be received by the district contest chairperson by the
10th of the following month.

9. SILENT AUCTION
DISTRICT 29-I FALL CONFERENCE . . .“GUIDING THROUGH SERVICE”
As in the past, a” Silent Auction” will be held at the District 29-I Fall conference. The
conference is scheduled for October 17 & 18 at Canaan Valley Resort. Auction items will be
available for bid through Saturday afternoon. The auction is held as a means to help defray
costs of the conference. If we are to have a successful auction we need auction items from as
many of the clubs as possible.
Possible ideas for auction item donations may include:
Handmade artistic or craft items (e.g. handmade jewelry)
Specialty or theme baskets ( e.g. wine, fruit, sweets, preserves)
Items of interest from your area or club (e.g. pin collections, pottery)
Any good quality items you would like to donate
In the past, the SILENT AUCTION has proven to be a popular fun activity for
our conference, therefore we are asking Lions and clubs to participate.

10. LIONS WORK PROGRAM DINNER
Shirley’s Diner in Romney, WV hosted the Annual WV Lions Work Program dinner
where students from the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind were recognized with
certificates for total hours worked this past school year. One student from each school received
a bonus check of fifty dollars for working the most hours.
Some twenty-four students from both the WV State School for the Deaf and the School
for the Blind give additional time and energy in part-time work around the campus of the
schools. They earn money for every hour worked doing such jobs and bussing tables, washing
dishes, running errands for teachers, assisting younger students, lawn care, and the like. They
are supervised, of course, by staff and advisors.
Lions Clubs of West Virginia raise monies to pay these hard-working students. Each year
numerous Lions Clubs contribute to this Work Program by sending checks to the Parade-of-
Checks held at the state convention. During the year additional ear-marked funds are sent to
Lion Roy Knight of the Romney Lions Club who is the District 29-I Program Coordinator.
Working with Penny Maphis of the WV School for the Deaf and Blind, Lion Roy reviews the
time sheets and signs the checks for the students.
At present the students can earn $4.50 an hour. They work anywhere from one hour a
year to two hundred and sixty hours a year. The pay they receive is an incentive to work hard,
balance time and energy, learn and perfect certain skills for future jobs once they leave school.
In the meantime the Lions Work Program enables students to have some extra spending money
while at school.
The Lions Work Program is just one of several projects undertaken by Lions. Meeting
monthly the Romney Lions Club funds eye sight testing, provides glasses, and educates for
diabetes which is a leading cause of sight loss. Working with other Clubs even costly eye surgery
can be done at the WVU Eye Center. If you would be interested in visiting a Lions Club
meeting and learning more about what Lionism is and how it serves the community you are
invited to a monthly dinner meeting (first Thursday of each month) at 6:30 p.m. in the
fellowship hall of Romney First United Methodist Church.

Format: 18 hole tournament with net and gross competition. All golfers are
automatically entered as individuals. Plus, there will be two and four team competitors.
Fee: $60 per player
Special Events: Variety of bonus events such as longest drive, closest to the
pin, and other yet to be determined but surely to please.
Handicaps: Net scores will be computed in accordance with the Calloway
System as per USGA publication PB 1220, Handicapping the unhandicapped.
Awards: 1st and 2nd place awards will be given for each event. Prizes will also be
awarded for special events as well as the most improved golfer award given by Jim Hensley.
Mulligans: Each participant may purchase 2 mulligans for $5.00. One may
be used for each nine. Proceeds will benefit the sight foundation.
Nourishment: Post tournament meal and awards presentation.
