 Cyber-bullying is harassing
behaviors committed through
electronic communication (social
media, email, online chats,
message board postings)
 Cyber-bullying is defined as
“repeated use of technology to
harass, humiliate, or threaten”
(Smith, 2012)
 Establish a zero-tolerance policy in the distance
learning environment that includes terminating access
to the online learning environment (Galbraith & Jones,
2010)
 Report to administration where appropriate (Galbraith
& Jones, 2010)
 Address the student involved and explain consequences
the behavior if it continues (Smith, 2012)
 Document the instances of the behavior (Galbraith &
Jones, 2010)
 If the cyber-bullying escalates into threats, consider
involving appropriate authorities (Incivility in an Online
Learning Environment, 2010)
In Albert Bandura’s (1997) thorough
examination of self-efficacy, he defined the
concept as a person’s beliefs about his/her
abilities to complete specific actions.
Self-efficacy is a major factor in how a person
approaches a particular task or challenge,
especially one that is new.
For the nontraditional student, beginning an
online course can be a major challenge that
can possibly lower their sense of self-efficacy
and their confidence in themselves.
As this modality can trigger different responses
in students compared to the traditional face-
to-face environment. It is important to
examine the factors that influence an
individual’s sense of self-efficacy and apply
these concepts directly to online educational
practices.
1.Verbal persuasion - Teachers can boost self-
efficacy with credible communication and
feedback to guide the student through the task
or motivate them to make their best effort.
2.Emotional state -A positive mood can boost
one's beliefs in self-efficacy, while anxiety can
undermine it.
 Learner postings that
are aggressive,
combative, or include
inappropriate
language
 Sexually explicit posts
 Establish a zero-tolerance policy in the
distance learning environment that includes
terminating access to the online learning
environment (Galbraith & Jones, 2010)
 Address the student involved and explain
consequences the behavior if it continues
(Smith, 2012)
 Report to administration where appropriate
