Hype Williams is a Film and music video director as well as a screenwriter,
who was born and grew up in Queens, New York. He first made himself
known by ‘tagging’ billboards, shops and playgrounds with his trade mark
‘HYPE’ and then beginning his directing career in 1991. Williams is mainly
apart of the Hip Hop scene as most of his work has been for famous Hip
Hop artists such as The Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Majority of his recent work contain
animation or special effects, particularly
his SFX are what attracted us to his
work, this is demonstrated ‘Superstar’
with the fire in Lupe Fiasco’s hand to the
left, this is actually my favourite piece of
his. This video embodied majority of the
ideas that we had in mind for our
remake of Kanye West’s ‘Stronger’
which Williams also directed.
These stills taken from the ‘Superstar’
video demonstrates his beautiful use
of light. Williams uses it to both hide
and highlight aspects of a shot for
example, the star in one shot, we just
see his outline and in another his face
and costume are brightly lighted. I also
admire the way in which Williams has
been able us such a plain background
artistically, which is what we have
aimed to do in our music video and
have displayed in our teaser.
