WRITE-UP
To start my presentation, let me define what is a DIKW Pyramid is.
The term DIKW is an acronym that represents Data, Information,
Knowledge and Wisdom. According to an article from
Ontotext.com, it represents the relationships between data,
information, knowledge and wisdom. Each building block is a step
towards a higher level – first comes data, then is information, next is
knowledge and finally comes wisdom. Each step answers different
questions about the initial data and adds value to it. The more we
enrich our data with meaning and context, the more knowledge
and insights we get out of it so we can take better, informed and
data-based decisions.
My example or application of the
DIKW Pyramid is based on my
current job as a Bookkeeper in a
private K to 12 school here in my
hometown. As a bookkeeper it is my
responsibility to take charge of the
financial reports to be presented to
the Principal and Director of the
institution. My data comes from the
Official Receipts issued to our clients
every time a payment is made, thus
it represents the Cash Inflows, while
Disbursements Vouchers are used to
record Cash Outflows that
represents expenses.
Using those data, I can gather the
information to be used for my Monthly
Financial Report on Cash Flows, citing
the summary of inflows and outflows for
the month as per account title. Then,
there’s knowledge that if the Cash
Inflows exceeds the Outflows, cash will
be available for the next month of
operations. However, if the difference of
the two is negative, then there is a
deficit in available cash for the next
month of operations. Using the
information above, wisdom would tell
me that if there is a surplus then the
institution is good to proceed for the
next month, however, if deficit, and
additional funding is necessary to
continue operations.
THANK
YOU!
